A fragment of a cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo-Saxon brooch of Small-Long Type, c. 6th century AD. The fragment consists of a rounded portion of the square brooch head-plate, broken on all perimeter edges and decorated with a ring-and-dot incised design to either side. The gently arched neck is complete and D-shaped in cross-section; it is possible that the neck was originally triangular-shaped in section, similar to other examples, but the surface has been severely abraded. A portion of the brooch body remains, without what was presumably a circular foot. The remains of th…

An incomplete copper-alloy disc brooch of Roman (c.3rd - 4th century AD) date. The remaining plate is sub-circular in plan, projecting to a point at the top and bottom ends. On the upper surface a moulded ring surrounds a concentric setting, which in turn surrounds an umbonate centre. Traces of gilding remain on the raised outer ring of the design and it is possible that trace amounts of enamel exist in the recessed in between the outer ring and the raised centre. The brooch is potentially missing a central glass decorative inlay. Almost all of the circumference of the brooch plate…

A corroded and bent, incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of the Hod Hill type, Hattatt's Class B (with side knobs/lugs). The sub-rectangular head terminates in a cylinder formed by rolling the terminal back round on itself (W.: 12.7mm). This retains the remnant of the iron axis bar in both halves either side of the central pin slot; the composition is suggested by iron corrosion at the abraded tips. Below the cylinder the head narrows slightly to a waist 9.8mm wide above a transverse ridge. Below this is a second waisted groove, then the bow. The central section is rectangular w…
