Object type: NAIL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Wrought Iron nails. Two near-complete hand made nails and three other nail shank fragments (a-e); the most complete nail (d) probably had a flat rounded head. The making of nails by a blacksmith would produce a rectilinear section, as opposed to the round section of modern mechanically drawn nail shanks. The process of manufacture remained effectively unchanged through the Medieval and Post-Medieval period. Suggested date: Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800. Lengths and Weights: a) L 135mm W 38.54gms, b) L 68mm W 16.79gms, c) L 58mm W 5.47gms, d) L 54mm W 10.74gms, e) L 37mm W …

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small flake or bladelet with 2 very small notched, on each side of flake, opposite each other. This appears to be deliberate. On the left hand side, the edge is trimmed above the notch, almost serrated rather than trimmed. Both notches have been worked from the dorsal side. At the proximal there is a rough flat area, and some cortex remains at the distal end. There is a clearly defined medial ridge. The flint is a medium grey colour and is translucent. The flint was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer [1981] illustrates a similar example on page 131, fig 57, No. L114 …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire

A small cast lead weight of later medieval date used by goldsmiths in relation to bullion. It is rectangular in form with inwardly curving sides. The upper surface is filled by a fleur-de-lis in low relief; the lower surface is plain. The object now has an off-white colour. Its mass of 55.9 grains (3.62g) relates to an eighth of a Paris troy ounce (30.5g) allowing for c. 5% loss to to wear and corrosion. The form and mass are comparable with a pair of bullion weights illustrated in Biggs and Withers (2000, 49; refs. 156, 157) and an example on this database - ref. SF-8F1591.

Wrought Iron horseshoe. Horseshoe of Clark Type 4 (1995; Horseshoes in The Medieval Horse and its Equipment: Medieval Finds from Excavations in London, London, HMSO, pages 75-101) . One calkin remains at one end of one branch, the other branch end was probably feathered. The web is broader (circa 46mm) and the shoe heavier than as specified by Clark (an average weight of 230 g with a web of width 30mm; the additional weight may have resulted f…

Flake with trimmed right and left hand edges, both at the lower ends. The remaining cortex on the dorsal side acts as backing when using the edge trimmed flake. The flake has snapped or been broken at the proximal end, forming a flat, or butt end. On the ventral side there is a considerable amount of gloss from use wear, with striations visible in the gloss. The flint is light grey in colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer [1981] illustrates a similar example on page 127, fig 55, No. L93 which is dated to the Neolithic.

Beneath the horse is a horizontal figure with a looping tail. This suggests that the image depicts St. George killing the dragon. There are elongated pellets radiating around the edge. The reverse has a vertical casting line with scars where the pin and catch were integrally cast but are now missing. A small section is missing from the lower left edge. According to Spencer (1998), the cult of St. George flourished in England from t…
