Pottery body sherd made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars, dark augite and mica and is mid-brown on the interior of the sherd, with some black patches of residue, and bright orange on the exterior where the surface has eroded away to reveal with oxidised core. This 'mucky' gabbroic fabric is seen in comparable local Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A wedge section long flake of translucent grey pebble flint with cream flecks. The proximal end has been flaked and used with gloss on the ventral surface at the pointed end. The lateral margins have different kinds of retouch with an invasively worked pair of shallow notches in one edge and another facet having semi-abrupt retouch on one edge. A tool of this form with end and side use might be called a fabricator and had several possible functions including borer, graver and strike a light. Butler(2005) illustrates a fabricator on page 169, fig 71, 10.
