An incomplete Medieval to Post-Medieval (1350-1600) copper alloy double oval buckle frame, missing its pin and with a damaged frame. Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and corroded fragment of a post-medieval cast copper-alloy seal-top spoon. The remnant consists of the top of the stem, which is in the form of a baluster-moulded knop surmounted by a disc. The lower end of the knop tapers downwards and appears to be fluted longitudinally, with moulded petal shapes set around its circumference. The spoon would date from circa 1500-1700; however, since the spoon is copper alloy rather than pewter, it more probably dates to the upper end of this date range (see Egan; Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition; 2005; p117).
