Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment of a strap fitting of probable later medieval or post-medieval date (1350-1700). The strap fitting is lozenge (diamond shaped) in plan. The upper face is domed (convex) in profile and D shaped in cross-section; the edges are bevelled. There is no evidence of cast or incised decoration on either the front or reverse of the fitting; however, this may be due to heavy corrosion. The reverse face of the fitting is concave with a single cast sub-rectangular projection (hook) which is folded back onto the reverse surface. The hook would have passed through the stra…

A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant, of Medieval date (probably c.1200-c.1400 AD). The suspension loop has been broken off and the artefact is in fair condition. The surface is worn, corroded and rough. However, enough enamel remains on the face to interpret the original design. The background was chequered, with one colour being silver; the other colour was enamelled and is now red. The pendant has a patchy mild green, dark green and brown patina. It is unusually thick and chunky. Compare PAS record ID: YORYM-5C8186. Length: 26.8mm; Width: 17.2mm; Thickness: 3.5mm;…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy finger ring of the 'belted buckle' type. The ring is designed to imitate a belt and buckle, with an open end designed to slide through the 'buckle' loop and therefore also allowing the ring size to be widened. The strap of the belt (or hoop of the ring) has an inscription ' MATER....' (Mother...) but most of it is too worn to read. It may be a religious inscription relating to the Virgin Mary. The buckle is of a type common during the medieval period, and can be described as an oval shaped buckle with two side knops near the strap junction; this type of buckle dates fro…

A possibly Roman lead alloy stylus, which is 71.31mm long and 9.66mm in diameter. The object is in fair condition with a creamy patina and weighs 33.59 grams. The object consists of a circular shaft which is tapered and faceted at one end and at the other end tapers to a point.
