A cast lead alloy unifaced disc with a series of cast holes; in plan the disc represents a relatively crude wheel. The date of the artefact is unknown, however from the casting techniques a later medieval - modern date is suggested (1350 - 1800). The front face is decorated with a cast design; this consists of a central raised boss from which eight irregular spokes extend conjoining with the outer rim of the disc. Each rib is decorated with a series of raised pellets; at the junction between the spoke and rim is an annulet or a solid pellet, the space between these is filled with salt…

A cast lead alloy vessel repair (pot mend) of possible Roman or Medieval date (50-400 / 1200-1500). The repair is complete but plough rolled; in plan it is broadly oval; in cross section an abraded H shape. The mend has been formed from a sheet of lead alloy which has been rolled and then inserted into the hole in a pottery vessel; a clear spiral pattern can be observed on the interior and exterior faces of the mend confirming this method of manufacture. A small undiagnostic sherd of pottery survives within one of the H shaped grooves. The pottery is hire fired and grey in colour, thi…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A pair of cast copper-alloy nutcrackers dating to the 17th or 18th century (1600-1800). The nutcrackers consist of two arms conjoined at the top by an integrally cast hinge with a rolled copper alloy axis bar. Each arm is similar in its cast decoration; this consists of a series of horizontal bars on the exterior surfaces of the upper arm, descending (and tapering in width and thickness) to two small sections of turned 'barley sugar twist' areas separated by raised circumferential ribs and terminating in small pointed knops, which echo the twisted decoration above. On the inner surf…

Complete flint blade of probable earlier Mesolithic date (6500BC - 4500BC). The flint blade is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and triangular (crested) in cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the upper of the ventral (lower) face. The lower (pointed) end shows evidence of retouch using a direct percussion from a hammerstone. One of the long edges also shows evidence of retouch, although this maybe an artificial artefact caused by movement in the ploughsoil. The flint is a mid creamy grey colour. This flint is likely to have come from a riverine or…

A small fragment of a cast copper alloy handle, or possibly a foot, from a copper alloy vessel, probably a skillet, of later medieval or early post medieval date (1300 - 1600).
