Cast copper alloy zoomorphic mount or stud of medieval date (1200 - 1450 AD). The mount is broadly sub-triangular in plan being D shape in cross section. The front face of the mount is domed whilst the rear is relatively. From the centre of the rear face a small oval cross sectioned rivet or stud extends; this is broken and distorted / bent as a result of movement in the ploughsoil. The rivet seems to be present on the upper face of the mount as a badly abraded recess; this suggests that it is a two part mount rather than cast in one piece. The front face of the mount is decorate…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy hooked mount of probable Medieval date. The nature of this piece suggests it may be a harness strap fitting.
The mount consists of a rectangular plate with the remnant of a wide, forward-facing hook projecting from the base. Within the plate, situated one above the other, are two domed-head copper-alloy rivets. These rivets have had their points flattened and the upper one also retains a sub-circular washer. The plate's upper surface bears traces of gilding. The object is bent and corroded. It measures 36.5mm long, 14.8mm wide and 7.8mm thick. It weighs 4.85g.
