Copper alloy Early Medieval hanging bowl mount fragment . A flat section of a possibly circular cast plate of estimated diameter c.68mm. One surface is decorated with spiral motif in relief, connected to a further incomplete interlace motif. The fields between the raised decoration is filled with (now) white enamel. Suggested date: Early Medieval, Anglo-Saxon, 500-700. The estimated size of the object is a little unusual.
An alternative interpretation as a fragment from an Iron Age mirror was initially considered by this reporter; and was revised following the kind advice of Sally …

Two conjoining fragments of cast leaded copper alloy turned vessel of probable late medieval to post medieval date (1400 - 1650). The fragments are much worn and irregular in shape. The conjoined edges are also abraded and the broken edge is likely to be due to the rim being flattened in antiquity presumably prior to deposition. The two fragments are likely to be from a large dish, bowl, or cooking vessel with a stepped and in-turned rim. The vessel fragments are a mid green colour with a polished patina. Due to the flattening of the rim it is impossible to suggest a projected diamete…

Sherd from the wall of a relatively thin walled Midlands Purple Ware pottery vessel, probably a drinking vessel of post medieval date (1600 – 1720). This sherd is relatively fresh with broken edges. The fabric of the sherd is a very hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a high proportion of mica and sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid purple orange and the inner and outer are a mottled purple grey. The inner and outer surfaces are also burnished. The outer edge has a series of parallel l…

There is also a high proportion of mica and sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid purple orange and the inner and outer surfaces are a mottled purple grey. Glazed sherd from the rim of an extremely hard earthenware jar, jug or storage vessel of probable later medieval date (1350-1550). The sherd consists of both the rim and part of the broken sidewall. The rim is near vertical and the sidewall expands slightly before tapering. It is relatively large with unabraded edges. The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is almost plastic in structure (being very like stoneware); it is mica rich, having frequent grit-like inclusions. The fabric is a matt grey colour. The exterior surface is glazed and it is a mottled brown green colour.
The sherd…

Nine fragments of sheet copper alloy vessel of probable late medieval to post medieval date (1350 - 1650). The fragments are much worn and irregular in shape; three are joined by metal rivets and another two show evidence of copper alloy rivets and associated holes. At least one fragment is from the rim of a vessel and it is likely that the fragments represent several different vessels. The three joined sheets are riveted together by rivets formed from rolled copper alloy sheet which has been fixed by hammering the ends. The body of the vessel seems to have been constructed first whil…

The foot from a small cast copper alloy vessel of later medieval or post medieval date (1300-1650). The foot is complete but badly abraded. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with tapered edges and a wedge shaped (triangular) slightly pointed foot. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan tapering slightly from the top to the base. In cross section the foot is a facetted D shaped with a prominent D shaped boss or pellet on the internal face. The base of the foot is even and relatively flat. The foot is a mid green colour with an uneven patina. This patina has been abraded probably thr…
