A silver-gilt eyelet formed of a triangular plate with soldered attachment loop formed into two small loops for sewing the fitting to textiles and a larger loop for a hook. The upper surface of the plate has a pellet at each apex and a triple-stranded border. Within the border is a symmetrical foliate design formed of wire in low relief with a further applied pellet towards the centred of the motif. Discussion: For the form and construction of this dress-fitting see Treasure case 2007 T565. The triangular form is Read's (2008, 160-161) Early post-medieval Class B, Type 3, although m…

A fragment from a knapped flint Neolithic axe. This would appear to be the butt end with a transverse break above. The flint is a variable grey/brown colour with a small patch of iron staining on one face.

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A later medieval copper-alloy thimble of cast construction. The thimble is domed with slightly flared sides and a rounded top. The drilled pits begin at the top, the uppermost part of which is bare, and continue in a continuous spiral to the base in a fairly regular fashion. The thickness of this cast thimble might suggest that it was used for heavy duty work. Above the base is a bare hoop delineated by an absence of pits which taper off. The base has ?four small, equally spaced indentations which may derive from the lathe turning process or the action of drilling the pits (Egan 1998, …

A cast copper-alloy fragment - possibly the terminal from a Roman sceptre handle. The object is a open sleeve with a thickened and flattened end (Dia.: 23.8mm; Th.: 3.55mm). Above this the sleeve tapers to a diameter of c. 18.55mm and narrows to a thickness of 1.45mm. The internal diameter is c. 16.5mm. Just before the object tapers there is a circumferential incised line. Having tapered there is a triple groove above which a double ridge. Above this the fragment has suffered a large loss implicating around half of the side. A similar decorative treatment continues on the extant…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy mid 1st century AD Roman probable dolphin type brooch, as derived from the Colchester type. The bow curves through over ninety degrees and expands into the bulbous head. The underside is curved with the convex wings extending little either side (max. W.: 16.05mm). The spring mechanism and pin are missing although the recess above the head to retain the chord is visible. The broken bow is sub-oval in cross-section. Its upper surface is neatly divided by five longitudinal ridges with grooves between. The central ridge and those to the sides a…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy fragment from a cooking vessel of medieval/post-medieval date: probably a handle lug from a cauldron, based on its size, possibly an open brace from a skillet. The fragment consists of a small section of the vessel's body with a curious bevelled edge on one side. The 'handle' that emerges from it is sub-oval in cross section. It turns through almost ninety degrees developing more of a teardrop cross-section through the turn with the narrower end internal. The object has been broken just after the bend in the past. The fragment has corroded to a grey/green colour wi…

A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The matrix is circular, with a semicircular suspension loop on the circumference of the upper face, now broken (Max. Th.: 6.95mm). The upper face has a slight recess at the circumeference. The die features a recessed flat topped shield bearing a lion rampant guardant (when viewing the seal impression), with three pellets or a possible flower in each top corner. The lion's mane is picked out by stippling. There is a rosette above the shield and also one to each side. Around the device is a personal legend; there is no border dividing th…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of probable early post-medieval date, complete with pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled externally on the upper surface; bevelling echoed internally on the lower surface. The basic wire pin survives loosely looped around the pin bar. The buckle frame has corroded to a red-brown colour with some patches of light-green corrosion product and darker green patina surviving in places. The buckle has been bent at an angle of about thirty degrees around the pin bar. Buckles of this si…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded fragment from a copper-alloy spoon of later medieval to post-medieval date. The fragment consists of the area above and below the junction of handle and bowl, the latter has been fractured in a number of places. The handle is broadly rectangular in cross-section and tapers as it travels towards its terminal. The bowl is shallow and the junction between the two elements undefined. Such a bowl shape and junction is characteristically later medieval/earlier post medieval; it is difficult to distinguish. Four fragments of similar underlying colour and corrosion product were foun…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval lead bag seal from Portsmouth (c. 18/19th century). The artefact is sub-circular. It would have had a central recess through which a cord would have passed. It is stamped on both faces with motifs in low relief. One face has lettering across its centre surmounted by a crown and with a rose below. The letters are obscured as a result of corrosion but appear to read '?G POST?' The other face has the word 'PORTS[M]OUTH' within a circular border with a central motif, indistinct but sub square in form. On this face a lip has been formed to one side. The artefact has corrode…
