Object type: CHATELAINE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Early Medieval cast copper-alloy chatelaine of probable 7th-century date. The chatelaine has a biconical neck at the top, imitating a spacer bead, decorated with incised transverse lines (lengh 11.0mm, maximum diameter 7.8mm). The neck appears to have an iron core or iron pin protruding from it judging by the terminal which is covered by iron corrosion. A triangular open work plate with rounded corners is cast integrally with the neck. It is 21.6mm long, 14.3mm wide and 2.3mm thick. The plate is mostly flat curving outwards on both sides at the top point to reach the same thickness a…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

A silver-gilt eyelet formed of a triangular plate with soldered attachment loop formed into two small loops for sewing the fitting to textiles and a larger loop for a hook. The upper surface of the plate has a pellet at each apex and a triple-stranded border. Within the border is a symmetrical foliate design formed of wire in low relief with a further applied pellet towards the centred of the motif. Discussion: For the form and construction of this dress-fitting see Treasure case 2007 T565. The triangular form is Read's (2008, 160-161) Early post-medieval Class B, Type 3, although m…

A fragment from a knapped flint Neolithic axe. This would appear to be the butt end with a transverse break above. Both faces are covered in removals; those on one face are generally far finer than the other. The cross-section at the break is sub oval. The flint is a variable grey/brown colour with a small patch of iron staining on one face.

Flint awl and/or scraper, probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Secondary flake, with cortex remaining along the left edge of the dorsal face. The object tapers to a point at the distal end, but the very tip is now missing. Both sides taper inwards very slightly at the proximal end. There are several long, thin removals on the dorsal face. There is very fine low-angle, short, parallel retouch along the left edge of the dorsal face. The flint is mid to light grey in colour with a speckled, milky, matt patina. It has a very small butt and prominent bulb and ripple lines on the …

Broad period: ROMAN

Cast copper alloy open bell with a large flat circular suspension loop attached to the rounded top of the hemispherical bell. The lower edges of the hemisphere are irregular suggesting old breaks and the sides probably projected down into a cone. Iron corrosion on the inner side may be the remains of the clapper. It is 17.9mm tall, 8.5mm excluding the loop, 14.4mm in diameter and weighs 5.30 grams. It is more solidly made than the usual Early Medieval 'norse bells' and may be Roman in date. Crummy (1983:127, no.4165) illustrates a similar but slightly larger bell but with a comparativ…

Flint borer, probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Secondary flake. There are a few large removals on the dorsal face. Long, stepped, semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch along the left edge of the dorsal face has caused this edge to curve inwards. Further stepped, abrupt retouch towards the distal end, also curving inwards, has created a protruding borer between these two sections. There is further very fine, short, low angle, parallel retouch along the right edge of the doral face, becoming much longer and more uneven towards the proximal end. The butt is wide and there is no visi…

Flint borer, probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Secondary flake. The object is sub-triangular in shape, tapering to a rounded point at the distal end. The left edge, when viewed from the ventral face has larger removals, with a single removal at the distal end creating a sharp edge to the pointed section. Flint implement on a secondary flake, which appears to have had several uses, possibly at different periods. To the right side of the ventral face is a notch, where a portion has been snapped away, possibly during microlith production. Above this, at the distal end, a small amount of retouch has created a slight spur, which may have been used as a borer. A small amount of further short, low-angle retouch can be seen in various places along the right edge of the dorsal face, creating a slightly uneven, serrated edge, perhaps indicating use as a knife or scraper. In the centre of this i…

A flint side scraper, notched flake and possible burin. Probably of Mesolithic to Neolithic date. To the left side of the dorsal face is a notch that is possibly the result of microlith production. Along the left side of the ventral face fine, short, low angle, parallel retouch can be seen, with two, small, apparently deliberate notches in the centre. The butt is wide and the bulb virtually non-existant. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour, with lighter milky patches in places. Length: 40.47mm, Width: 25.11mm, Thickness: 5.19mm, Weight: 6.7g

A Middle Early-Medieval (700-800) copper alloy silvered lozenge-shaped object, possibly a link from a two- or three-linked pin set. It has a loop at either end. Measures 50.73x16.81x1.89mm and weighs 4.61g. The lozenge shape is defined by a thickened edge. The area between has been chip-carved to show two entwined spirals, both emerging from a central point. Both runs into a smaller spiral either side of the central one, which in turn develops into a pointed lobe inside either end of the lozenge. Each loop is pierced (c.1.2mm diameter) and one has the remains of an iron rivet in …
