Record ID: CORN-F256F8
Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast heraldic shield-shaped horse harness pendant with the image of a lion rampant facing left just visible. This uppper face of the pendant is corroded so that it is hard to tell if the background surface beind the lion would have been enamelled to show off the lion which may also have been gilt. Part of the shiled and part of the suspension loop are now missing. Read (2001) illustrates a similar example on page 53, Fig.32, No.411, which is dated to the 14th century.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman brooch or fibula in the form of the end of the bow and the remains of the catchplate. The bow retains the remains of two rows of circular recesses along its vertical borders which would have presumably been originally enamelled. The curvature of the bow and its terminal suggest that it probably came from a T-shaped brooch. Hattatt (2000) illustrates a similar example on page 304, Fig.163, No.411 which is dated from the 1st to the 2nd century AD.

Record ID: CORN-F22E35
Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman hinged dolphin-type brooch with a small fragment of the copper alloy hinge within the tubular wings. Only one wing survives, and there are the remains of semi-circular recesses along the length of the wing which would have presumably been enamelled. The head of the brooch has a central raised moulded ridge which extends vertically down the bow and seems (as it is too corroded to be sure) to end in two rows of oblique lines, at right angles to each other, forming two borders along the edge of the tapering bow to its foot. A small part of the catchplate…

Object type: PURSE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy purse bar, missing the central square-shaped block, with its swivelling loop and neck, and the other side arm, with its suspension loop. The central block is drilled and would have fitted the swivelling neck of the loop. There are the remains of niello lattice work or cross hatching around the circumference of this side arm, which would have been mirrored on the other side. There is a moulded, stylised, zoomorphic head at one end of the arm, which would have attached to the central block, gripping the side arm, which is circular in cross-section, in its mo…

Object type: COIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Clipped copper alloy 8 maravedis of Felipe III (1598-1621) of Spain, dated to 1611 on reverse, but countermarked later in under Felipe IV's reign (1621-1665) as an 8 maravedis 'resellado' which means 'resealed' or 'restruck'. The coin has the mark 'R X' on the obverse for REX and the various '8' or 'VIII' stamps refer to the denomination of the coin. Just above the RX mark, but upside-down, is another countermark which reads 165[], which gives the countermarking date of either 1654 or 1655 as one of the documented dates in Felipe IV's reign (John Naylor pers comm).
