Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A gold finger ring of Medieval date. It has a simple undecorated wire hoop that expands at the shoulders and opposite the bezel narrows, perhaps partly due to use wear. The hoop is slightly misshapen and this appears to also be the result of usage rather than post-depositional damage. At the junction of hoop and bezel are prominent transverse rectangular ridges. The bezel itself is sub-rectangular in plan with two long tapering sides that have a short straight side at the base end and a wider, curved top end. In profile the bezel is sub-lozenge shaped with flattened base and top. The …

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A broken and corroded lead-alloy late medieval pilgrim badge (15th century AD). The object would have originally been a flat, pointed oval badge, probably surrounded by a mandorla; damage has resulted in bends, the loss of around a third of the artefact and abrading to the edges. The upper surface is moulded in low relief and depicts a lady facing in a long dress. Her arms are bent at the elbows with the hands joined together, probably in prayer. The figure is missing their head; if they are a female saint holding an attribute the latter is indiscernible, and arguably absent. She is su…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy medieval harness pendant of unusual composite construction. The pendant is square, with a perforated suspension loop protruding from the centre of its upper surface. The back of the loop is flush with the integral back plate, while the upper part protrudes forwards. It curves back round in a shallow arc with a notch above the plate. Emerging from the centre of the upper surface of the lower plate is a separate fitting riveted in place consisting of four prongs bent round on themselves into a claw; two of the prongs are truncated and bent back slightly. They retain wh…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint thumbnail scraper, made from a retouched tertiary waste flake. The ventral face is very slightly convex and the bulb of purcussion appears to have been removed by a recent break. The dorsal face has three flaking scars, surrounded on three edges by semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch. The distal end has a slightly rolled edge resulting from later damage probably through ploughing or similar action. There is a large flake missing at the proximal end, which appears to have occured naturally following deposition. The flint is green-grey-whitish in colour, with a milky patina which has o…

These turrets feature white adhesive uppermost and may have taken glass settings. There is a further turret in the centre of the dome. The dome is decorated with three defined areas of stippling. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead-alloy post-medieval cloth seal from the Low Countries (16th to 17th century AD). This upper disc is sub-circular and on its upper surface features a design stamped in low relief. It depicts a haloed St Peter standing facing right holding a large key in each hand. Within a beaded border is the partial inscription: 'ST?... PEETER'. The disc was not large enough to take all of the stamp and as a result most of the border is not included. The inner face has a zigzag imprint of fabric - a striped twill. The stub of a loop survives just off centre. The representation of St Peter and …

Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small cast cu-alloy vessel fragment, probably the upper part of a bell, dating from the late post-medieval or modern period. The surface is corroded and the vessel's original colour and decoration are now indeterminable. It might be the upper part of a bell because of the thinly cast, heavily tinned cu-alloy and also, the hole which is in the centre of the top of the object. This would have been the hole though which the clapper was inserted from the inside. The clapper is now missing. The object could have been a sheep, goat's or small cow bell.

A pin cast in copper alloy of early-medieval date (mid Anglo-Saxon). The pin has a polyhedral head (13.05 x 9.5 x 7.8mm), formed from a cuboid with its corners cut off; the triangles and lozenges thus formed are not regular. The four lozengiform fields round the edges are decorated with four and three punched ring and dots, respectively on the larger and smaller faces. Each of the triangular faces feature a single punched ring and dot; the uppermost surface is completely plain.
Directly below the head is a collar. The circular-sectioned shaft continues beyond this until it is broken…
