Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A gold finger ring of Medieval date. It has a simple undecorated wire hoop that expands at the shoulders and opposite the bezel narrows, perhaps partly due to use wear. The hoop is slightly misshapen and this appears to also be the result of usage rather than post-depositional damage. At the junction of hoop and bezel are prominent transverse rectangular ridges. The bezel itself is sub-rectangular in plan with two long tapering sides that have a short straight side at the base end and a wider, curved top end. In profile the bezel is sub-lozenge shaped with flattened base and top. The …

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broken and corroded lead-alloy late medieval pilgrim badge (15th century AD). The object would have originally been a flat, pointed oval badge, probably surrounded by a mandorla; damage has resulted in bends, the loss of around a third of the artefact and abrading to the edges. The upper surface is moulded in low relief and depicts a lady facing in a long dress. Her arms are bent at the elbows with the hands joined together, probably in prayer. The figure is missing their head; if they are a female saint holding an attribute the latter is indiscernible, and arguably absent. She is su…

A copper-alloy medieval harness pendant of unusual composite construction. The pendant is square, with a perforated suspension loop protruding from the centre of its upper surface. The back of the loop is flush with the integral back plate, while the upper part protrudes forwards. It curves back round in a shallow arc with a notch above the plate. Emerging from the centre of the upper surface of the lower plate is a separate fitting riveted in place consisting of four prongs bent round on themselves into a claw; two of the prongs are truncated and bent back slightly. Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint thumbnail scraper, made from a retouched tertiary waste flake. The ventral face is very slightly convex and the bulb of purcussion appears to have been removed by a recent break. The dorsal face has three flaking scars, surrounded on three edges by semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch. The distal end has a slightly rolled edge resulting from later damage probably through ploughing or similar action. There is a large flake missing at the proximal end, which appears to have occured naturally following deposition. The flint is green-grey-whitish in colour, with a milky patina which has o…

Attached to this is an upper plate featuring a central convex dome. At three cardinal points are integral cylindrical 'turrets'; there is a perforation at the fourth.
