Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large lead oval ball with multiple, irregularly spaced, circular iron studs or pins in it. The iron pieces may be the stubs of projecting nails or may be dome headed studs. They cover the sides with the top and bottom left bare apart from the corroded remains of what is probably an iron loop for suspension at the top (but could be another of the studs/pins). The purpose and age of the object is unclear. Suggestions include a Roman or medieval steelyard weight; although it is more crudely shaped than they usually are and the iron inclusions are not usual; or a mace/cosh with projecting …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy suspension mount probably for a medieval harness pendant. The mount has a large irregularly shaped plate with two incomplete projections from its lower edge which would have originally been bent backwards to form two loops through which a horizontal bar would have passed from which a pendant could have hung. The main plate is roughly lozenge shaped with the top and bottom edges expanded into triangular projections and the sides broken, the more complete side appears to have knops at the top and bottom corners. There are no attachment holes in the remaining s…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy strip with a raised design of bunches of four leaves rising from a base line with small knops btween them against a red enamel background. The strip probably originally formed a ring and the elaborate decoration may suggest a finger ring rather than ferrule. The regularity of the design and it's style suggests a post medieval date c.1600-1800 although such a plain and item is hard to date precisely. The strip is 27.2mm long, 4.9mm wide and 1.1mm thick. It weighs 1.42 grams.
