Object type: LINCH PIN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper-alloy Iron Age linch pin terminal, which is the foot of the pin. The foot has a deep square socket, inside a cylindrical, tapering shaft. This square aperture would have held the iron pin, which has long since corroded away. Traces of this iron pin can be seen in the socket. The exterior of the shaft tapers down to the opposite terminal, to where it curves around and is attached to a flat circular plate. The surface is pitted but remains in a good condition, with a mid brownish-green patina. The flat, circular plate is slightly recessed on the front surface. Inside this r…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy bar-mount. The mount has an oblong in the centre with rounded terminals. The top and bottom terminals each house a rivet hole, both still contain a copper alloy rivet. The rivet extends backwards from the mount. The metal surface of the object is dark brownish-green in colour and slightly worn. The mount probably dates to the 12th - 15th century. Two of these bar mounts would have hung down from a waist strap and would have held an arched pendant mount in position. Purses were often hung from these. Parallels can see seen in Egan and Pritchard, 1991, p214, Fig: 134.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

The stem of the key is undecorated, but has a collar around the end next to the bow. The bow is completely missing, due to the break. There is a channel below the stem. One of the lobes extends into a flattened suspension loop at right angles to the plane of the main body. The pendant carries the device of a saltire with a central dot.
