Object type: CHAFING DISH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment from of the handle of a copper alloy chafing dish. This consists of a ring, with an ingregrally cast rivet, the end of which was swaged over to secure it to the dish. The rivet is separated from the ring by stepped shoulders. The handle terminates in a three dimensional animal's head, shaped by casting but with the details of the nostrils and eyes added with incised lines. The animal's head was attached to a metal bar which is cranked at 90 degrees after passing through the ring. Originally it would have turned again to form the handle.
