The rivets are seperate and arranged in three regularly spaced pairs, three are in situ and three missing; they are 6.9mm long suggesting the mount was on a thick strap. Only a small amount of the back plate survives around the square end. The front plate is only 1.0mm thick but is cast with recessed cells on the front which are not reflected on the back. Between the pairs of rivets are recessed squares con…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. The complete oval loop is unbroken, but there is a large gap between the loop and shaft. There is a rectangular transverse ridge at the end of the loop and the shaft. The pin tapers slightly to a blunted tip with a cutaway. The tip is bent upwards. The object has now corroded to a dull, dark grey patina. The size of this object points to this being an example of a buckle pin as opposed to a brooch pin. …

The top half of a circular stone rotary quern. Rotary querns were used to grind food- usually grain to make flour for bread. The top stone had a hole in the centre, where a wooden handle was slotted in. The handle could then be used to turn the top stone over the lower stone, in order to grind up the grain. Rotary querns first came into use in the Iron age, and were used throughout out the Roman and Medieval periods. Querns were generally replaced with the advent of large mills and windmills, although in some parts of the world, they are still in use today. This …

An incomplete cast copper alloy late Roman 'amphora-shaped' strap end. It is complete except for the splayed, square ended, split attachment end that is missing due to old breaks. The strap end is flat with faceted edges and flares around broad sloping 'shoulders' before tapering to a pointed terminal end that has a small knop. At the attachment end are the remains of two horizontal projections and the start of two circular perforations where the 'handles' of the amphora would have begun, but which are now missing due to old breaks. The exterior surface of the strap end is decorated w…
