Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A struck flint flake with small amounts of retouch at the distal end. The flake is a tertiary piece with several arises on the dorsal face. In the centre of the ventral face is a large hole, part of a natural flaw in the flint. The piece has a large striking platform and appears to have been crudely struck using a hard hammer. The sides curve outwards before narrowing to a point. The point has been enhanced by some short, abrupt, parallel retouch on the distal end of the dorsal face. The flaw in the flint, however, and the unretouched, irregular sides, suggest this piece was not shape…

The complete oval loop is unbroken, but there is a large gap between the loop and shaft. There is a rectangular transverse ridge at the end of the loop and the shaft. The pin tapers slightly to a blunted tip with a cutaway. The tip is bent upwards. The object has now corroded to a dull, dark grey patina. The size of this object points to this being an example of a buckle pin as opposed to a brooch pin. …

Rotary querns first came into use in the Iron age, and were used throughout out the Roman and Medieval periods. Querns were generally replaced with the advent of large mills and windmills, although in some parts of the world, they are still in use today. This …

Lead-alloy token probably dating from the late medieval, post-medieval or early modern period. It is very worn on both obverse and reverse, but seems to have had a capital letter on one side and a spider's-web decoration on the other side. Lead-alloy tokens like this one are extremely common and very difficult to date unless they have a company's name or a value printed on their faces. However, they are usually considered to date from c. 1600-1900 when they were used as mining tokens or factory shops where employees could exchange them for goods or labour.
