The top half of a circular stone rotary quern. Rotary querns were used to grind food- usually grain to make flour for bread. The top stone had a hole in the centre, where a wooden handle was slotted in. The handle could then be used to turn the top stone over the lower stone, in order to grind up the grain.
Rotary querns first came into use in the Iron age, and were used throughout out the Roman and Medieval periods. Querns were generally replaced with the advent of large mills and windmills, although in some parts of the world, they are still in use today.
