The top half of a circular stone rotary quern. Rotary querns were used to grind food- usually grain to make flour for bread. The top stone had a hole in the centre, where a wooden handle was slotted in. The handle could then be used to turn the top stone over the lower stone, in order to grind up the grain. Rotary querns first came into use in the Iron age, and were used throughout out the Roman and Medieval periods. An incomplete cast copper-alloy cosmetic end-looped mortar. The cosmetic mortar is an elongated crescent in profile with an integral loop beneath one terminal. The plain loop-end of the pestle is truncated and only half of the loop remains; the breaks are worn. The body of the mortar is 'U' shaped in cross section, which tapers in width and depth, becoming shallower and narrower towards each terminal. The groove is very smooth and worn. Cast copper alloy pin, surviving in two fragments, dating from the Middle Iron Age, that is c. 500-200BC. The stem is complete and shows a swan's neck kick at the top; the break is old. The head is very ornate. It is wheel-shaped with moulded decoration. Between the head and the shaft sits a bulbous neck moulding between two narrow collars. The head is shaped like a wheel with four spokes and seventeen mouldings on the top: twelve around the wheel, like the hours of a clock, one on each spoke and a central one.
