Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and incomplete two-piece copper-alloy dagger scabbard chape. The front-piece is cast and terminates in a scallop form. The grooves and ridges which create the effect of the shell radiate out from a recessed openwork trefoil. Immediately above this perforation is a transverse ridge featuring irregular diagonal incisions, above which is a central, heart-shaped aperture. Above this latter is a transverse incisions, above which a crenellated top (W.: 23.4mm). There is a small break between the two. The sheet backplate is considerably thinner than the front-piece. On this example it …

An incomplete and damaged cast copper-alloy medieval composite buckle frame with forked spacer. The oval frame has a central, pointed lip. The frame is flat underneath and bevelled on the upper surface and has been narrowed at the spacer for the pin. In cross-section it is triangular. There is a break in the frame on one of the sides and the pin is missing. The spacer has a sub-rectangular aperture next to the frame (W.: 2-3mm), expanding to 9.7mm as the prongs become defined. One of the prongs has been truncated, while the other has been bent to one side. The spacer is recessed on bot…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and slightly corroded rectangular double-looped buckle of post-medieval date. The buckle has lost its pin. The frame is bevelled externally; with a flat lower surface it is broadly triangular in cross-section. The central pin bar has a central depression around which the pin would have hinged; it is unclear as to whether this was caused by wear or a deliberate act. The frame can be seen to have been bent around the axis of the pin bar, when viewed in profile. The buckle is paralleled in Whitehead (1996, 75; ref. 464); as such a broad 17th-century date is proposed. The art…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy hooked tag dating to the post-medieval period. The artefact has survived well and all of its attributes are intact: curved hook (bent), sub-rectangular openwork body (slightly bent), rectangular attachment loop. The body of the tag has a solid, moulded foliate section at its base, where it joins the hook. From this a central line emerges, bifurcates, and curves round on itself on each side, before terminating in an openwork 'S'. Within this, prongs ensure that the openwork area takes the form of a pair of trefoils. The reverse is flat, carrying the trefoil…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval (late 17th-century) date. The weight has a low rim (W.: 3.7mm) on its upper surface. Within is a central punch, itself within a slightly raised area in the middle of the weight. Punched within the rim at 12 o'clock is the sword of St Paul (for the City of London). At 6 o'clock is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights), while at 11 o'clock the royal cipher has been struck. This latter is the crowned initial 'W' surmounting an 'M', denoting William and Mary (1688-94 AD). The lower surface of the weight features a s…
