Fragment of a cast copper alloy disc brooch. Only about a quarter of the brooch survives. The brooch face is circular and slightly convex, decorated with a rope-like perimeter, a circle in the centre and a quatrefoil decorating the field between. The cell within each arm is recessed and filled with a decgraded enamel of uncertain colour. The background is filled with blue enamel. The circular band and central cell are also filled with a degraded enamel. There is an incomplete suspension loop at the top behind which is a double lug for a hinged pin.

18th century silver rectangular buckle frame.
Rectangular buckle frame with a slightly expanded, 'D' shaped fore edge. On this edge is a notch which accommodated the pin, which is now missing. The frame measures 19.3mm wide by 17mm long and has a thickness of 2.4mm. Its mass is 2.68g.
The lustre, density and colour of this buckle frame show that it contains more than the required 10% of silver. Buckles of this form were in use in the later part of the Middle ages but the form is simple and was also used at a later date. The later Medieval buckles are all made from copper all…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Much worn and abraded, large body fragment of a knapped, ground and polished axe-head of probable later Neolithic date (2500-2100 BC). The axe is knapped from a light blueish/brown buff volcanic tuff. The fragment has been reworked extensively and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and irregular, with a distinctive humped face, in cross section. What is left of the sides of the axe have been heavily abraded and there is some evidence of gently rounded, polished side facets. On one side, striations are clearly visible (see close-up image). The axe fragment has been damaged in several ar…

Very small stone axe, probably dating from the Late Neolithic period, i.e. c. 2500-2100 BC. The axe is knapped from a dark grey buff (probably) volcanic tuff or possibly a softer material, i.e. sandstone. The axe is roughly triangular in shape with a straight and unworked blade (although that is difficult to determine because the surface is very worn) and long, shaped side facets. All surfaces are very worn and it is difficult to ascertain what wear marks are older and which are more recent. The material seems quite soft and (possibly) unusual for making a stone axe since even narrower…

Cast cu-alloy plate brooch dating from the Early Roman period, i.e. late 2nd century. The brooch is complete except for the tip of the pin and the bottom part of the catch plate. The brooch is round with to concentric mouldings in its inner part, surrouding the central raised boss. The inner concentric circles was decorated with a line of small dots. Cast lead-alloy fragment, possibly the arm of a crucifix dating from the late post-medieval or earlier modern period, i.e. 1500-1800. The fragment is roughly triangular-shaped and decorated with a very basic inset scrollwork pattern. The only point that shows breakage is at the narrow end which suggests that it may have been part of a crucifix. The artefact was badly made and there is a casting flaw at one of the corners where there was not enough lead-alloy to fill the mould.
