Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An open-ended gilt copper-alloy ring of possible late Early-medieval date. There is much debate as to the function and date of these artefacts. They are thought by some to be ear-rings; however, the thickness of the terminals would seem to make them unsuitable for this purpose and a more likely explanation is that they are finger-rings. Similar gilt finger-rings have been described as Anglo-Scandinavian, although the recorder knows of no examples from securely dated contexts. The object has been cast in one piece and consists of a squashed (originally) circular hoop. The body is of …

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy unidentified object of unknown date. The object is a curved bar which is circular in section at one end where it is also broken in antiquity, but which flattens and opens out into a flat triangular terminal at the other. It is 54.5mm long, 18.6mm wide and 11.7mm thick. Immediately before the terminal is a projecting zoomorphic head on one side of the bar only. There is also an incised chevron on the reverse where the terminal meets the bar. The object is pitted and corroded, but some areas of a deep brown glossy patina survive. Similar items are discussed in the January…

Object type: HANGING BOWL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two joining fragments of a mount from an early-medieval hanging bowl. The complete mount would have been circular with a central circular hole and three evenly-spaced holes of the same size in the field. The mount would have been enamelled, probably in red, but there is no obvious sign of this. The back is undecorated. 7th century AD.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Equal-arm brooch of very unusual type, with much of the surface obscured by pockmarks and corrosion, flap of catchplate missing and iron staining around pin lug. Both arms are decorated with three sets of transverse grooves, the outer two separated from the inner one by a flat area with chamfered edges. On the D-sectioned bow a double median groove runs between rectangular panels forming facets at the ends. Both panels are decorated with transverse grooves. The narrow arms, transverse grooves and side chamfers are quite unlike those found on standard Anglian equal-armed brooches (Hine…
