Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small part of the frame of an elaborate post medieval two piece buckle. The material of the buckle has corroded badly; it is probably copper alloy but may be one of the new alloys introduced in this period; some traces of silvering are left in the indentations of the decoration. The piece is 22.3mm long, 11.3mm wide and 2.1mm thick. On the reverse is cast an integeral closed loop which previously had an iron spindle running through it, the tip of the spindle remains in the loop. The frame has a marked arch from side to side and this, along with the high decorative but fragile nature …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Date: 15th century Description: Large silver finger ring with a channelled hoop. It is twisted on the shoulders and this extends towards the back of the hoop. Incisions on the shoulders create foliate patterns. The band widens to form an irregularly shaped hexagonal bezel with a punched border. In the centre of the bezel is an engraved outline of the letter 'I'. Discussion: This may have been used as a signet ring. It has close parallels with a ring found in Dorset (2004 T7: Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.209), although the bezel contains the maker's mark.
