An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b, 4c, Plate 46. The wings are semi-cylindrical with incomplete wing cap at each terminal. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. There is a small downturned hook at the centre of the upper edge of the wings. Roman vessel dating from 43 to 120 AD. Sherd of a white ware ring-necked flagon, comprised of part of the rim and neck. The rim expands outwards, and the lower rings appear as a series of grooves rather than pronounced rings. The breaks are relatively recent. The sherd weighs 10.13 grams. The rim is 7.60mm thick, and the neck is 5.31mm thick.

A complete copper-alloy medieval circa 14th century harness pendant and suspension mount. It measures 30.49mm in total length. The suspension mount is rectangular in shape with a rounded front face and edges, projecting from the centre of its back face is a cylindrical integral rivet. The lower half of the mount splits into two opposing loops, these hold a corroded iron bar between them horizontally, the pendant itself hangs from this bar. A complete copper-alloy D-shaped, or possibly incomplete double oval looped buckle frame of medieval or early post medieval date, due to wear it is impossible to tell which. Measuring 17.99mm in width and 17.04mm in length. The outer edge and sides have a rounded projecting knop in the centre and there are transverse grooves between these.

A complete copper-alloy decorative belt or strap mount. Recatngular in shape measuring 41.76mm in length and 22.39mm in width. There are two rivet holes through either end and one central one, all have copper-alloy rivets with domed heads through them apart from one. The front face has a pair of border grooves and within these punched annulets. Traces of gilding also survive.

A barbed and tanged flint arrowhead, probably Late Neolithic in date (based on the most similar examples in Bond (2004, 147; ref. 180). One barb is broken with the point missing. The tang is relatively thick (6.9mm) and appears off centre due to a small chip. The point of the head is also snapped off.

A complete cast copper alloy strap slide of Medieval date (c. AD 1175 - c. AD 1400). Length 17.7mm, width 21.2mm and 2.0mm thick. Weight 2.43g. The frame of the loop is trapezoidal in plan and is flat on both faces. The outside edge is 21.2mm in width and the width of the inside edge is 16.0mm.The outside edge is 1.8mm thick, not quite as thick as the other three sides. A cast copper strap loop of medieval date. The distorted rectangular fitting measures 25.4mm by 22.3mm by 5.4mm and weighs 3.1g. The top of the frame has slightly protruding corners and a central oval knop with moulded cross-hatching, the back of which is recessed. There is a rivet hole in the central of the back edge. A worn copper alloy harness pendant which dates from the medieval period. The pendant is shield shaped with an integral projecting loop at the top which is at right angles to the pendant. The pendant is decorated with traces of enamel of indeterminate colour in the form of a chevron. There may be creatures in the three spaces but the pendant is too poorly preserved to be certain of this. Harness pendants are discussed in the “Finds Research Group Datasheet 5: Horse harness Pendants” by Nick Griffiths (1986) and he writes that shield shaped pendants normally date from the fourteen…

A medieval copper alloy rectangular buckle plate decorated with a profile low-relief animal, probably a lion sejant, looking right, away from the two broken hinge loops and towards the attachment end. The tail is long and curved and ends in a tuft, and there is a hint of mane before the indistinct head. There are two rivet holes, one in either corner of the attachment end, with traces of corrosion from iron rivets. 12th to 14th century.

An incomplete copper alloy Roman Trumpet brooch dating from 45 - 200AD. The bow of the brooch has an angular profile and an angular D shaped cross section. The bow tapers from a flared head to a turned foot knop. The brooch measures 69.2mm in length, 17.4mm width (across head), 12.8mm width (across bow) is 11.9mm thick (across bow), and weighs 31.1 grams. Copper alloy brooch, equal-ended type with lozenge shaped plate and zoomorphic terminals. Missing terminal with pin loop and pin; incomplete lozenge shaped plate. The snake head terminal has a punched dot eyes, punched V-shapes for scales and a strong V-shaped moulding at the neck. A large piece of Roman box flue tile, with the side face scored for practical purpose with a mixture of horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. The large inclusion of a pebble indicates the nature of the coarseware used. Smoothed on visible side, with raised edge at bottom end. There is rounding of the edges caused by wear while buried, as box tiles were designed to have clean edges to fit together better. Other damage includes severe scratches.
