A worn and corroded sub-conical weight cast in lead. The crude base bears an off-centre perforation which runs along the length of the object (Dia.: c. 7.6mm); the hole tapers slightly towards the top. Around the hole is possibly a circular groove. Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy trumpet derivative brooch of early Roman date. The brooch measures 44.8mm by 21.2mm by 13.8mm and weighs 27.7g. The wings are incomplete but appear to have been semi-cylindrical originally, in order to hide the spring for the (missing) pin. A small amount of iron corrosion in the centre of the back of the wings suggests that the pin was made of iron. The thick bow has a rectangular cross-section and projects forward into a large knop, presumably derived from the acanthus knops on trumpet brooches. It is rather worn in places but appears to have been form…

Copper alloy brooch, Hod Hill type with side projections near the top of the bow. Missing pin, one side projection; bent; very corroded/abraded. The lower bow has a convex face and tapers to the foot which has a broad fully round knob. Surviving width (hinge) 11.5mm, length 49mm.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A silver element of post-medieval (17th-century) date. It has a rounded terminal with central dot in silver and two prongs. It is crude and flat. The original function of this object is unclear; it is possibly from a dress pin of bodkin form although it is flat rather than quadrangular in section which would argue against this. It is perhaps part of a toilet set.
