In plan it is sub-drop shape with a straight upper edge. The ampulla has also been bent over obliquely at the narrowest point at the neck after it has been ripped along this line. The rip is not recent. The ampulla has a slightly swollen rounded base, and a narrowed neck. Both lower faces of the ampulla are decorated. One face is decorated with a high-relief flower design and the other cross-hatching on the reverse face; however the overall design is unclear due to the fold. The upper edge of the ampulla is slightly abraded, but has been closed or crimped, but does appear to be opened, instead the contents may have been used via the rip.  The surface of the ampulla has developed a light grey/cream coloured patina. Its length from the upper edge to the apex of the base is 33.07mm, the maximum width across the lower portion is 27.87mm, and the thickness of the base of the ampulla is 20.49mm. It weighs 32.88g. &#13;
&#13;
Ampullae were used as a flask to hold holy water, becoming a souvenir of a pilgrimage; they date to the late 12th to 15th centuries (Spencer, B. 1990, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum p, 57 ff). The origin of this ampulla is not known.&#13;

Two piece strap ends consist of a folded sheet plate, to which the strap was riveted and a cast terminal, it is the cast terminal that this object seems most likely to be.  It measures 38.49mm in length and 19.10mm in width.    &#13;
&#13;
It is roughly rectangular shape and the attachment end has two projecting lugs, corroded iron remains can be seen around these and originally an iron bar would have passed through the lugs and the folded end of the sheet part of the strap end, holding the two components together.  The terminal has notches edges and five circular holes through it, one roughly in each corner and one in the centre, the front face has short decorative grooves between these holes.  The terminal tapers to a rounded point and has a projecting romanesque style animal head at its tip, this has a small circular loop at its end set at right angles to it.     &#13;
&#13;
Parallels for this terminal of a probable two piece strap end have been found in London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991, 154-155, fig 101, 720-726), however these parallel are much more simply in style and have one circular hole through their centres rather than several smaller ones.  Despite this the form of the terminal is very similar with the loops at the attachment end and a terminal loop.  These parallel are believed to be 14th-15th century in date but this more ornate example with its romanesque style could possibly be as early as 12th century in date.</description><fourFigureLon>1.34288</fourFigureLon></result><result><rulerName>Uncertain - 3rd century</rulerName><denominationName>Radiate (antoninianus)</denominationName><district>STRATFORD ON AVON</district><objecttype>COIN</objecttype><county>WARWICKSHIRE</county><created>2007-04-02T16:05:56Z</created><regionName>WEST MIDLANDS</regionName><diameter>16.25</diameter><fromdate>260</fromdate><materialTerm>Copper alloy</materialTerm><creator>Angie Bolton</creator><identifier>Angie Bolton</identifier><obverseDescription>Bust wearing a radiate crown, otherwise the detailes are unclear.</obverseDescription><id>176381</id><old_findID>WAW-129D76</old_findID><workflow>4</workflow><parish>BIDFORD ON AVON</parish><weight>1.39</weight><mintmark>Illegible.</mintmark><updated>2011-02-24T13:21:43Z</updated><reverseLegend>Illegible.</reverseLegend><quantity>1</quantity><todate>295</todate><broadperiod>ROMAN</broadperiod><fourFigureLat>52.157205</fourFigureLat><reverseDescription>The reverse is unclear.</reverseDescription><description>Roman coin: copper alloy radiate of an unknown late 3rd century Emperor. It is 36.4x35mm in diameter (internal hole 25mm diameter), D-shaped in section and flat on the underside. The pin is flat in section.&#13;
&#13;
The curved part of the brooch has been drilled with holes 2mm in diameter, one then a pair all the way around so the brooch is symmetrical along the pin line. There is a slight distance of undrilled brooch either side of the constriction for the pin. Egan and Pritchard, 1991, comment that drilled decoration on brooches does not necessarily suggest collets for stones or enamel (cf. no.1317 for similar drilled decoration). Indeed the surface below this example has tiny flecks of gilding, suggesting its intention was to show this. There are also tiny specks of gilding on the curving surface. The brooch is 2.9mm thick.&#13;
&#13;
The flat underside of the brooch appears to have a cut-out piece directly behind the line of the drilled decoration, presumably to add gilding to before replacing in the brooch. It is unclear how this has been fixed in place though traces of a shiny substance around the edges some kind of glue, or solder.&#13;
&#13;
The pin has a ridge below where it curls around the frame. Cf Egan and Pritchard no.1314 for the pin, and for a brooch of roughly the same size and shape.&#13;

This is a large example and is complete apart from one fragment of the handle area of the amphora which is missing due to an old break.  It measures 75.95mm in length and 29.35mm in width.     &#13;
&#13;
The attachment end is split and has a shaped edge with two rivet holes through it. The falring split attachment end tapers into the neck of the 'amphora' with open work handles. The main body of the 'amphora' them flares outwards with downwards sloping shoulders, and tapers to a point. The front face is decorated in the centre of the main body of the 'amphora' with five ring and dot motifs, four arranged around a central one. </description><fourFigureLon>1.342208</fourFigureLon></result></results></response>
