Incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.l. Plate 48. The wings are incomplete, the extant wing is semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end cap. The axis bar, spring and pin are missing. The axis bar, spring - pin may have been formed from iron as large amounts of iron corrosion are present solely around the head of the brooch. The iron corrosion has preserved the outline of the spring which was formed with a minimum of eight turns and was attached by an external chord to a rearward facing hook. This h…

A copper-alloy unidentified object probably Roman in date, superficially resembles a Roman bow brooch with a head stud (Hattatt 1989, 332, no 426). However, it is cast in one, it has a rectangular curvilinear shaft or bow, possibly with crude worn triangular indented cells along its edges although wear makes thie possible decoration unclear. One end is incomplete due to an old break. The other end has an oval projection on its upper face, similar to a head stud, and then curves downwards flaring in width with a cylindrical bar, which appears to be integral, through its centre. I…

Incomplete cast copper alloy strap end of probable later medieval date (1300-1450). The strap end is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The longitudinal edges are beveled. The strap end is formed by folding a length of cast sheet metal into two halves with the fold being at the base of the strap end. The fold is closed for approximately ½ the length of the strap end and opens at the other end to form a < shape. This is secured by a single copper alloy rivet which pierces both the upper and lower faces. The rivet hole on the upper face is recessed and concealed by …

A corroded and slightly damaged copper-alloy strap-end of late Early-medieval date. A complete post-medieval crotal bell cast in copper-alloy. The upper hemisphere features a pair of sound holes. Below the casting seam, the lower half features two sound holes joined by a slot. It is decorated with 'sunburst' pattern around a semi-circular cartouche. It is uncertain as to whether the pea which would have created the sound has survived as the object was recorded uncleaned. The suspension loop is rectangular and slightly bent, with a sub-rectangular perforation. It is long at 16.9mm. A high suspension loop might suggest a 17th-century date (Bailey 1995, 45).
