A copper-alloy unidentified object probably Roman in date, superficially resembles a Roman bow brooch with a head stud (Hattatt 1989, 332, no 426). However, it is cast in one, it has a rectangular curvilinear shaft or bow, possibly with crude worn triangular indented cells along its edges although wear makes thie possible decoration unclear. One end is incomplete due to an old break. The other end has an oval projection on its upper face, similar to a head stud, and then curves downwards flaring in width with a cylindrical bar, which appears to be integral, through its centre. I…

Copper alloy crossbow brooch. Complete except perhaps the pin is missing the end (within catchplate); worn and corroded areas on the surface, probably quite heavily cleaned. Wide hexagonal section crossarm with double rib moulding at junction with rounded knobs. Headknob cast on the top of the bow, smaller and also rounded on a cylindrical base. The narrow trapezoidal section bow has traces of punched ?triangles along the centre and a single rib/flange above the junction with the foot. Medieval gilt horse harness suspension mount, flat-sectioned and cut-out in the form of a double-headed eagle with slotted projection at base folded onto reverse to form twin suspension-loops (bent and distorted), integral rivet on reverse. Decorated with finely engraved lines delineating eyes and feathers. 10 x 23mm. 12th-13th century.
