Object type: BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy livery badge in the form of a boar. It weighs 33g, and measures
60.6mm in length (from snout to tail), 32.8mm in height, and is 5.08mm thick. The overall form is well made, but detail is rather lacking, with the ears and features of the head depicted in a rather rudimentary manner. The reverse is undecorated and slightly concave, with a marked rim. There are no signs of any lugs or pins.
The badge is medieval in date. It is notable that the boar was Richard III (1483 – 1485)'s official symbol, and many such badges were made as souvenirs for his coronation.
