Copper alloy personal seal matrix, also known as a 'fob' seal. It appears to have been cast in two pieces, the casting flashes of which have been smoothed a little ut are still quite prominent. The handle is rather flat but trefoil with a flat knobbed terminal. Each lobe is pierced through, and there is an additional piercing throught the centre. The stem extends below the handle and is also rather flat, expanding into the matrix itself which is rather smooth with tooling marks. The inscription MI either side of a vegetable (or flower?) of some kind (possibly an onion) is within a groo…

Rather peculiar and crude incomplete copper alloy Romano British bow brooch, the main body of which is flat and 1mm thickness from head to foot, where it thickens and expands into a 11mm deep catchplate. The bow is 8mm wide below an 8mm wide flat top, which curls underneath to hold the axis bar for the pin which is missing about 2/3 of its length. The bow tapers to a less than 1mm wide foot. The axis bar has one end burred over to stop it falling out. The pin (although broken in antiquity) is quite robust. It is circular in section but expands and flattens at the attachment end into a …

This piece has a 25mm-long pointed feature, tapering from 5mm to zero, like a tang extending from midway along a flat iron object 4mm thick and 18mm broad, which is broken off just below the attachment. It might conceivably be the tang of an implement like a hand file. Otherwise indeterminate.

Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
early medieval copper alloy object, 22mm long, 12mm wide and 14mm high. The object is roughly sub rectangular, its upper surface curves downwards at each side. The object is decorated with almond shaped eyes which have small rounded animal ears behind them, placed towards the top of the object. Behind the ears there is a v shaped dip and the object curves downwards, giving the shape of a head. The underside of the object has a deep semi-circular groove cut out of it where the object would have wrapped around something, possibly a stirrup. The style would suggest an Anglo-Scandinavian date.

A copper-alloy seal matrix. The top is broken, but evidently would have once had three loops, which suggests that it dates from the late 16th to 17th centuries. The seal motif is difficult to make out, although it is possible that it depicts a bird with a long beak. The object suffers quite badly from corrosion.
