This item 19mm long is shaped in half-round with a flattened back. It is formed of rod 2.3mm broad and 2.5mm thick, which suddenly broadens to 4mm wide and 3mm thick, before tapering to a terminal of 2mm in both dimensions. The overall effect is of a long serpentine head with a tapered snout. This could be broken off some longer object, but the 'neck' end is apparently cut rather than broken, and there is no sign of how this item might have been fixed to another: there are no signs of securing pins on the back. This serpentine head form recurs frequently among middle Saxon items from t…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small, broken faceted-headed pin presumably of Middle Saxon age. The head is 4mm square and displays four equal lozenges on the side faces with an additional lozenge on the top, the triangular chamfers between forming the facets of the upper corners. There is a single collar between the head and the shaft, and the shaft is of rod 2mm in diameter. The point of the pin is broken off and missing, but 19mm of the shaft survives, which at a short distance from the broken end has been bent in antiquity to a 90 degree bend on a very tight curve. This may be connected with its breakage, whi…

A bronze object formed of a 2mm thick strip of bronze 30mm long, which tapers evenly from a breadth of 7mm at one end to a point at the other. At the broader end it is hammered to make it thinner, raising the possibility that this was intended as a sharpened edge and that the object is a chisel-blade or small chasing tool. Although Anglo-Saxon finds are frequently produced from this field, there is nothing intrinsic in the present object to enable one to date it, and the identification suggested may be wholly wrong.

Small copper alloy buckle hoop 17mm long by 9.7mm across, formed of continuous rod 3.3mm thick on outer side and 1mm thick on the inner. There is a very distinct 'shoulder' at the point where the inner or pin-bearing rod becomes thinner than the outer hoop, suggesting that this buckle was intended to have a folded bronze plate with a central piercing, to hold the pin in its central position on the small inner bar.

This artefact was originally identified at a 16th - 17th Century dress fastener. Therefore the artefact was reported as a possible Treasure item and was sent to the British Museum. The British Museum's Post-Medieval artefact specialist (Dora Thornton) has suggested that the artefact is more likely to be a watch key than a dress-hook. The watch key is silver, with traces of what could be niello. The artefact is triangular in shape tapering to a point which appears to be the zoomorphic head of a bird. The opposite end of the triangle has been broken; the breaks do not look recent. The w…

The reverse of the mount is plain and recessed at the back of the head. Suspension loop cast integrally at top.
