Object type: MIRROR
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Incomplete and fragmentary mirror disc of Roman date, probably a fine type hand mirror. The nineteen fragments represent around 90% of the mirror disc, with much of the circumference present. The mirror is made of a highly polished speculum (a copper alloy containing a high concentration of tin). Speculum tends to be brittle, and this is evidenced by the fragmentary and shattered state of this example. The mirror’s reflecting surface has survived in remarkable condition (for British soils), and retains a polished appearance. The mirror’s reflecting surface is slightly convex and is…

Copper-alloy seal matrix with tall faceted conical handle. The die is circular, 22mm in diameter, and the handle ends in a trefoil perforation below a small upper circular perforation. Both the central motif and the inscription are easily legible. The central motif is a shield, which has been divided into four with a double cross. In the top right and bottom left quarters of the shield there is a crescent moon shape, whilst the top left and bottom right have a star shape. A plant or feather is depicted coming out of the top of the shield. Surrounding the shield there is a circle of do…

Cast copper alloy handle lug from a cauldron of Medieval or early Post Medieval date. The lug is broken at one end, probably immediately before the right-angled turn, with this fragment probably representing the lower piece. The fragment is somewhat eroded, but originally would have been of pointed oval section, becoming more circular near the turn. The lug end expands as it approaches the attachment point. Some residues of sooting are evident on the surface.

This description has been completed by looking at the impression left by the seal matrix. The matrix is made from copper alloy and has a tall handle ending in a trefoil perforation. The die is oval in shape, measuring 24.5 x 20.9mm. The die depicts two figures wearing loose fitting clothes. It is impossible to say whether they are females or clerics, due to the amount of wear. The two figures are standing on a plinth; the one on the left is holding up its right arm and the one on the right is holding up its left arm. The legend around the figures and the perimeter of the matrix is ille…

At one end is an elongated bowl, suboval in plan, which is 13.74mm long and 7.24mm at its widest point. Just below the bowl on the reverse is a rectangular notch, presumably a decorative feature. The opposite end of the scoop has a plain, flattened subrectangular terminal that is 10.64mm long, 6.63mm wide and 1.46mm thick. The end of the terminal has a semicircular notch taken from it, which may be part of the design. Alternatively the terminal may have extended…
