Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete copper-alloy worn horse harness pendant. This pendant is flat and shield shaped and measures 35mm in length and 23mm in width. The suspension loop is fragmentary due to wear and old breaks, however, enough remains to be sure that it was set at 90 degrees to the plane of the pendant. The front face of the pendant is decorated with background Or (gold) and a saltire (cross placed diagonally across the shield) engrailed Gules (red) with enamel. This design is attributed to John Le Moigne, of Suffolk, Knight of the shire, Hunts. 1290, Cambs 1303, summonded against the Scots …

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

A fragment of a copper-alloy early Anglo Saxon long brooch, either a cruciform or a small-long brooch. Only part of the top of the bow survives, with the rest of the brooch missing due to old breaks. The bow is 30mm in length and 13mm in width. It does not have a rectangular-section panel at the top, but instead meets the headplate still with a rounded cross-section. The junction between bow and headplate is marked by a double moulding around the convex end of the bow. This moulding is concave between the two ridges. A small fragment of the headplate still survives. This shap…

An incomplete copper-alloy hook-piece from a wrist-clasp of Hines's Form B18b (bar and plate cast in one piece with knobs or discs along the rear edge). Roughly half of this hook-piece survives, with an old break; it is roughly rectangular and measures 23mm in length and 15mm in width. The hook-piece is bent and warped due to heat damage; this is important, as it implies that cremation was taking place on this probable cemetery site. The bar is decorated with evenly spaced transverse grooves, and the junction between the bar and the plate is marked by two longitudinal grooves. The r…

An incomplete copper-alloy hook-piece from a wrist-clasp, of Hines's Form B12 (bar only, with perforated sewing lugs). The bar is rectangular; about one-third is missing due to an old break, and the surviving part measures 27mm in length and 14mm in width. The upper face of the bar is decorated with a raised square moulding at the end, then with transverse mouldings and grooves, and then with a raised rectangular moulding in the centre of the bar. Beyond this are more transverse grooves and mouldings before the bar is broken. The rear edge has two surviving projections. In the centre …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver finger ring depicting two clasped hands on the front. The ring is inscribed around the outer perimeter 'IHESVS NAZAREN' (Jesus of Nazareth). Rings depicting clasped hands are often classed as 'love/devotional' rings, however the presence of the religious inscription would seem to indicate that the ring was symbolic of the wearers commitment to God.
