Copper alloy brooch, probably Colchester derivative hinged type. Bow with bent fragment of one wing only, very corroded. The bow is convex backed and tapering with longitudinal narrow ribs and flutes on the rounded front. Traces of transverse grooves at the foot. Surviving length 35mm, surviving width 10mm. Similar to an eg from South Elmham (SEM 009)

The wings of the brooch are semi-cylindrical with abraded wing caps. The bow head has vertical ribbing of varying widths and depths. This portion of the bow head forms a loop when the lower edge of the bow head meets the bow behind. The bow travels in a vertical manner down from the lower edge of the wings. This portion of the bow is an elongated rectangular shape in cross-section. The bow head, bow and wings are all cast as one piece. Decorative frame with the bar offset and narrowed and slight mouldings at the bar terminals. The frame has a D shaped cross section and expands towards the outside edge of the frame. The pin survives and is a simple piece of flat copper alloy tapering to a point with a single transverse ridge near the loop.

Cast buckle with an elaborate scallop lip an projections at the bar terminals. The frame has a bevelled outer edge and flat underside. The bar has a circular cross section with the pin still attached. The pin has a D shaped cross-section and tapers along its length to the point. The buckle is slightly concave in profile, possibly because of recent distortion.

Only a fragment of the frame remains of the buckle. The fragment includes the apex of the loop, which has a pronounced sub-triangular protrusion to include the notch. Either side of the notch the outer edge of the frame is decorated with three narrow knops foring ribbing. The upper surface of the frame has incised decoration which has an 'L' shape either side of the notch and parallel oblique lines in the field. The reverse of the frame has radiating striations which seem to be due to wear not decoration. The frame has a dark green patina.

The strap end is an elongated sub-oval shape in plan. The upper surface is decorated. The terminal has a zoomorphic design, which has incised oval shapes for eyes, and the slight narrowing towards the terminal defines the snout. The body of the strap end is divided into four panels which have: 'ZS SZ' incised as decoration. The second terminal has two rivet holes. Incomplete copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester type, one-piece, dating to the 1st century AD, probably of the mid-1st century (Hattatt 1989). The bow is of plain gently tapering circular cross-section. There are remnants of slight wings at the head of a forward curving overhead chord-hook. The pin and spring emerged from beneath the chord and are now missing apart from the stub of the spring. All features are integral to the brooch.

An elaborate copper alloy terret with a hoop with a 'tear-shaped' profile, growing longer as it approaches the oval stops and circular at the top. The bar has been roughly cast and has a thin oval cross section. The stops consist of a rounded moulding with a median groove, this groove is absent on the interior of the moulding and would appear to have been worn by the harness straps. Heavily eroded unlooped palstave with a decorative mid rib on each face, there is the suggestion of an additional shield-pattern, although there is not enough of the original surface surviving to be certain. One face appears to exhibit a shield-shaped depression on the blade below the stop-ridge. It is now difficult to determine the original width of the blade edge, height of the stop ridge and flanges or length of the butt. The clasp is an elongated trapezoidal shape in plan. The narrow terminal has an in-set rectangular protrusion which curles under forming the clasp mechanism. Uniface coin weight. The marked side bears a crowned shield, the crown central point is a fleur-de-lys. The motifs in the shield are three fleur-de-lys' (2 + 1). There is evidence of lettering or lys design outside of the shield but not readable due to some surface flaking from the cast. It is probably a french ecu coin weight from the period 1422-1475. This coin was in use in England on a par with the four shillings up to 1525.
