Fragment of copper-alloy spearhead tip, lozenge-shaped in cross-section and with a lozenge-shaped socket reaching to within about 35 mm of the broken end. All edges, except tip break, are severely abraded. The tip break is therefore probably more recent, though it actually shows a slight casting void. The lozenge-shaped cross-section socket is a characteristic of Wilburton form spearheads (cf. the Isleham hoard) of the Late Bronze Age, c. 1200-1000 BC.

Object type: BOOK FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find validated and published by finds advisers
Hookplate from a book clasp. Basically rectangular, one end is slightly flared and shaped into two lobes, and is now damaged with one corner missing. There is a separate copper-alloy rivet in each lobe, and beyond these there is decoration of three indented circles. There is a fourth circle in the centre of the hookplate, and to one side of this is a shallow rectangular projection. This is odd, as the opposite edge is smooth with no hint of a broken-off pair to the projection. Further up the plate is another possible copper-alloy rivet, and then the plate narrows to the bent-under…

Thick flat piece of copper-alloy plate, made in the shape of a bird or animal head. The neck is narrow (6 mm wide) and broken (fresh break). The head is bulbous, with two triangular ears projecting at the back, a curved brow/eye area, two short pointed jaws or an open beak, and a curved chin. The upper face of the plate is smoothly polished, and no added decoration can be seen; although there is a hint of a circle in the eye area and a possible curve for the cheek, these appear to be just smooth areas with slightly less corrosion and slightly higher polish. The edges are bevelled w…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find validated and published by finds advisers
Biconical lead steelyard weight. The two halves are of different sizes; the apex of the taller half has the remains of an iron loop (stubs of two iron wires protruding), but the apex of the lower half appears to have had no loop. The lead is now quite badly corroded and the weight now weighs 159.31g. It is 36 mm long and the diameter is 38 mm.

Cast copper-alloy leg from a vessel, probably a cauldron. The leg is unusually shaped; triangular with a sharp pointed end, and triangular in cross-section too. At the top, where it would have been attached to the vessel, it is extremely badly cast; there is a hollow on the reverse where it may have fitted around the curved body of the vessel, but there is a big void on one side and the other corner seems never to have been cast at all.

Incomplete handle lug with fragment of rim from a copper-alloy cauldron (large cooking pot). The wall of the cauldron is 4 mm thick and the rim is simple and unthickened. The handle lug projects about 7 mm below the rim. It is circular in section, 15 mm in diameter, and is broken at its angled corner. The fragment of rim measures 23 x 33.5 mm, and the handle lug measures 53 mm from the inside of the vessel to the break. There is extensive orange staining, probably iron corrosion. The fragment of cauldron rim joins with another fragment of rim found 20-30 m away and recorded as s…

Large fragment of rim from a copper-alloy cauldron. The rim is flaring but otherwise not thickened or elaborated in any way; it is 4 mm thick. A small part of the curved belly of the cauldron survives. There are thick black soot deposits on both the inner and outer surfaces and there is extensive orange staining, probably iron corrosion. This fragment joins with another rim fragment, this one including half of a handle lug, found 20-30 m away and recorded as sf732/5817.
