HARNESS PENDANT</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>Medieval copper alloy harness pendant. The pendant is a lozenge shaped plate with a transverse suspension loop projecting from the top with a drilled circular hole. The pendant is decorated on both sides; incised on the back and moulded on the front. Both faces have traces of gilding. The front, with the loop to the top of the image, appears to show an animal within foliage; possibly a monkey, squirrel or cat facing left with limbs extending forward as if to clutch a branch surrounded by possible leaves to represent a tree. The back also appears to show an animal within a line border, possibly a lion or griffin, facing right with the head at the top, the tail curved up then down ending in four tufts in the left corner, the curled lower legs fitted into the lower corner and the upper limbs in the right corner. On the back the design is orientated with the loop to the bottom of the image. It measures 41.3mm long, 28.0mm wide, 5.6mm thick at the loop, 1.8mm at the plate and weighs 6.31g.
While some harness pendants date from the late 12th century the majority are 13th&#45;14th century in date Griffiths (1986:1). The design appears decorative or symbolic rather than heraldic.</full>

<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A fragment from the handle of a post&#45;medieval cast lead&#45;alloy (lead&#45;tin) spoon. The fragment is the corroded and abraded handle terminal. The terminal is expanded (W.: 21.55mm), and tapers towards the break (W.: 13.3mm). The lower surface is plain; the upper surface features moulded decoration in low relief. The decoration is in the form of an inverted symmetrical foliate design with two side lobes gathered together either side of a central lobe. There is a moulded ball to each side of the point at which the design is gathered. There are further small pellets between the lobes and a moulded U&#45;shaped curve above.
This fragment dates to the late 17th/early 18th&#45;century. The piece is generally grey in colour with areas that have corroded to an lighter colour. The sides have started to split slightly and the fragment is bent upwards at the point of break.</full>

DRESS FASTENER (UNKNOWN)</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A corroded, abraded and now incomplete post&#45;medieval cast copper&#45;alloy dress fastener eye&#45;piece (16&#45;17th century AD). It has an oval plate orientated transversely with three small circular loops for attachment by sewing and one larger loop which engaged with the hook&#45;piece. The sewing loops are located one centrally at the base, now abraded through, two at the other end flanking the main loop, protruding to each side, one broken through. Vestiges of the main rectangular loop survive, as this too has been broken. The base of this loop consists of moulded swags that converge. The main field on the upper surface is decorated with a design moulded in low relief within a ropework border. There is a central six&#45;petalled flower from which bars emerge at the cardinal points. The longer bars terminate in smaller flowers, with a leaf in each quarter&#39;s angle. The lower surface is flat and plain.
This fastener is the companion eye&#45;piece to a hook&#45;piece published by Read (2008, 173; ref. 651) which he classifies as his Early post&#45;medieval Class A, Type 2. See ref. NARC&#45;20B077 on this database for a complete example of an eye&#45;piece. This artefact has corroded to a red&#45;brown colour and is largely covered in areas of tinning and some off&#45;white patches. The central sewing loop has been bent upwards slightly as a result of old damage.</full>

FINGER RING</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A slightly distorted stirrup shaped medieval silver finger&#45;ring. The bezel of the ring consists of a spherical knop on a flattish triangular shoulder. This abruptly changes to a narrow flat band, 3.77mm and 1.27mm thick. Along the outer face of the hoop the widely spaced letters AVE MA are roughly inscribed in Lombardic style. Presumably this is a shortened form of the Latin, Ave Maria or Hail Mary. Why the letters are not closer together to include the whole words remains unclear
Medieval stirrup rings with the silver knop bezel of 1200&#45;1400 are commonly reported under Treasure Act 1996. For a comparison see finger&#45;ring from Codford, Wiltshire (2006 T236, Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, fig 420) as well as Treasure Annual Report 2005/6 fig nos. 414, 415 and 416.

In terms of age and as the object contains more than the minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.</full>

BROOCH</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>The leg and foot from a broken cast copper&#45;alloy Roman Trumpet brooch (1st/2nd century AD). The break seems to have occurred just above a button at the junction of bow and foot. At the break the bow is broadly plano&#45;convex in cross&#45;section. There is a transverse ridge above and below the button. The button itself is broadly rectangular and slightly convex, with a concavity on the lower surface. It is decorated with a central transverse ridge created due to transverse grooves above and below. This zone has been bent upwards as a result of the old damage that has broken the brooch.
The leg is flat and tapers very slightly as it travels to the foot from the button (W.: 6.8 &#45; 4.1mm). On the lower surface, the triangular catch&#45;plate survives well, apart from abrasions at the fold. Its web extends c. 19.2mm up the leg in total. On the upper surface it terminates in a defined button formed of a double ridge, a characteristic feature of Trumpet brooches. For a Trumpet brooch with a similarly plain button see Hattatt (2000, 328; ref. 438B).</full>

<description>
<full>A complete cast copper&#45;alloy post&#45;medieval sub&#45;oval shoe or knee buckle with plate (c. 17th century). The frame is bevelled externally. Both outer edges are rounded. The sides have a bifid moulding at the pin bar ends, with a curved moulding beyond to each side. The pin bar is integral; around is looped a thick wire pin whose tip has been bent to one side. The pin is retained within a notch in a folded plate. The plate is sub&#45;rectangular with rounded ends, pierced at the end for a stud, now missing (L.: 22.25mm). The frame is slightly bowed in profile probably as a result of function rather than damage. This piece has a mid&#45;brown patina with some green corrosion product on the plate. The plate has been bent down at the attachment end as a result of old damage.</full>

<full>A Lower Palaeolithic 500,000 to 40,000 BC Acheulian hand axe possibly sub&#45;cordate, knapped from dark grey flint. Flakes have been removed from both surfaces to shape the axe creating numerous scars and there is some damage possibly from glacial activity or plough. It is an elongated oval in plan, tapering toward a pointed cutting end. It has an elongated lenticular cross section with pointed edges. The edges of the axe are damaged and worn. The surfaces of the axe are a dark grey. The axe is 54mm long and the width is 30mm. The axe shares similarities with KENT&#45;4B61A0 and ESS&#45;144FE8.
It is thought that Homo erectus was the first hominid to use such technology (bifacial hand axes), though this industry is much more readily associated with Neanderthals as well.</full>
