Copper alloy vessel fragment. Cast cauldron leg. Triangular section leg, expanded from a thinner upper end to a broad flat-based foot with faint curving indications of a five-toed form below a moulded collar passing round the front sides. The zoomorphic conceit allies the object to a high medieval enthusiasm for animal forms, particularly those like the lion which bore heraldic significance. Faint traces of sooting appear on the back, and are perhaps lost to abrasion elsewhere. Alternatively, this vessel may have seen its primary use as tableware, with only a passing use for cooking. …

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with one broader and one narrower flat face and with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.4mm, Walton Rogers form A2. In profile the form of the object appears canted towards one side. A deep notch in the broader upper surface may either be for attachment of cord, or may signal conversion of whorl to line weight. Patinated. The mass may suggest a primary function plying a cord, while the aperture size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000 Diameter: 27.3mm, Thickness: 15.1mm, Weight: 46.07gms
