Early-medieval or medieval lead spindle whorl. It is broadly circular, with a perimeter edge that varies between vertical and oblique, flat on one face and roughly flat on the opposite face, except for four low protruding irregularly-shaped lumps spaced out around the outside. They could be said to be at roughly three, six, nine and eleven o'clock. The perforation in the centre is circular, neat and of uniform diameter throughout, but perhaps very slightly oblique. Lead spindle whorls seem to have been in use from the 10th to 14th centuries. External diameter: 24.3mm. Internal d…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a probable Roman copper alloy confronted dolphin type military buckle frame. The curving upper body with dorsal crest and head remain extant and form the curving corner of the buckle frame. The nose puckers and terminates in a blunt and relatively smooth flat end with a moulded peripheral groove. However, despite the fact that the end appears flat it is perhaps a worn and eroded brittle fracture that has separated from the other symmetrical part of the frame down a line of grooved decoration. A likely similar buckle frame can be seen on the PAS database ref. LIN-76AA41. C…

Incomplete Roman enamelled plate brooch of Mackreth class 3; probably 3.a (Horse) or 3.c (Hares/Hounds). The fragment consists of the body section of an animal running right and is truncated by old breaks across the lower neck and the first part of the legs. There is a circular empty enamel cell on the hind quarters and a larger cell containing just two tiny flecks of bluish-green enamel running along the body and up the neck. The lack of tail is perhaps more suggestive of a hare but the missing feet and head mean this is far from conclusive. The reverse of the 2mm thick plate has the…
