A cast copper alloy object, possibly a sword or dagger pommel. The date of the item is unclear; the &#39;pommel&#39; is pelta&#45;shaped which might suggest a Roman date, however a similar object is known from Barrowby, Lincolnshire and was discovered in (unstratified) association with medieval material (See DENO&#45;DBCC13).
The item is sub&#45;oval in plan and rectangular in cross&#45;section. The item has two curved side arms with outward curving nibs. The central stem is rectangular in plan and cross&#45;section and has two downward curved tabs reminiscant of a fleur&#45;de&#45;lis, which might suggest a Medieval date.
A tapering rectangular hole passes through the centre which is now filled with iron corrosion.

2. Plano&#45;convex ?bead. There are no drill holes. Diam. 18mm, hight 8mm.
3. Large ?bead. Only approximately one quarter remains. Originally bun&#45;shaped, circular and with a hole through the centre. Decorated with two bands on the top, and four around the centre. Diam. 40mm, height 14mm.

FINGER RING</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>
A copper alloy wire finger ring of Roman date. The hoop is constructed from a single strand of copper alloy that is circular in section. The ends of the hoop overlap and coil round each other twice to form an adjustable mechanism.
A near identical example is published by Crummy from an excavated context at Roman Colchester (Crummy, 1983: no. 1756). The current example differs only in that the two spirals are spaced further apart and the hoop is perhaps very slightly larger. The published example comes from a context dated to c.49&#45;55 AD, suggesting a 1st century AD date for the current ring.

<full>Pedestal base from a Roman beaker. The fabric is white/cream with traces of an orange slip suggesting that this is a Nene&#45;Valley colour coated ware. This shard was however discovered with the use of a metal detector; a small tablet&#45;shaped piece of copper&#45;alloy is stuck to the base, with what might be a thin layer of iron corrosion lining the interior. Sooting is visible around the base of the pot.
The copper&#45;alloy appears to be contemporary to the vessel and migth suggest that the vessel was used as a cremation urn, with the metal being the remains of a grave&#45;good.</full>
