Regular creasing indicates that the sheet was originally folded three times to form a small 'package', c. 37.5 mm square. It was unfolded by the finder. The whole surface is very crumpled, but a series of diagonal incised lines is visible as well as linear incised lines parallel to and just inside the border. It is uncertain whether or not the sheet was inscribed with a text. Dr Roger Tomlin, who examined the object on 31 March, comments: 'The surface is very crumpled, but in two or three places tiny patches of 'writing' can be distinguished from the crumpling; that is, a few strokes or loops inscribed by a blunt point. They may be part of a continuous text, but this remains to be seen'.
The state of preservation of thin copper alloy foil (see results of metal analysis below) is remarkable and may be due to burial in anaerobic conditions, perhaps foreshore mud.

Date: pre-modern, possibly Roman-period.

Dimensions: 144.6 x 75.3 mm and c. 0.1 - 0.2 mm thick.

Weight: 2.21 g.

Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated that the metal is an alloy of copper with no detectable precious metal.

Under the terms of the 1996 Treasure Act the object does not qualify as Treasure.

"datefound1":null,"datefound2":null
"ruler1":null,"ruler2":null
"numdate1":"269","numdate2":"271

A Roman copper alloy coin: radiate of Victorinus dating AD269-271. This is part of the lower stone of a hand turned quern made from volcanic lavastone from the Mayen-Niedermendig area of the Eifel Hills region of Germany. The fragment includes part of the outer edge and the inner edge to the spindle. The lower surface is pecked and the upper surface and the outer edge are dressed with lined tooling. On the upper surface the lined tooling comprises sections of diagonal parallel lines, spaced 2-3mm apart, and the sections are off-set against each other. On the outer edge there are vertical parallel lines covering the surface. There is a rectangular cutaway section adjacent to the spindle-hole on the upper surface. When complete this would have been a small rotary quern with an estimated external diameter of 200mm, other published examples have a diameter of c. 400mm.

Dimensions: width: 77.49mm; thickness: 35.47mm; estimated external diameter of complete quern: 200mm; weight: 588.7g.

Identification by Jackie Keily, Curator, Museum of London.

"datefound1":null,"datefound2":null
"ruler1":null,"ruler2":null
"numdate1":"330","numdate2":"335

A Roman copper alloy coin: nummus from the House of Constantine dating AD330-335.
