A fragment of a lead cloth seal, dating from the 16th - 17th Century.<\/p>

Only about 50% of the seal survives. The traders' mark is still partially visible on the front surface. It takes the form of a letter G, with a scroll below it and up the middle of the seal. Presumably a second letter would have been visible on the right, but this has broken off. The reverse seal features another letter which is not that clear, possibly an I or L.<\/p>

Description:
\nA gold posy ring dating from the 16th or 17th century. The hoop is formed of flower designs, hearts, foliage and other decorative motifs. On parts of the exterior enamel has survived. Colours that remain are blue and white, and more is decayed. Inside is it inscribed \"My [heart motif] the centure love this circle is [heart motif on its side containing a C]\". Traces of black enamel remain visible in the lettering which is lower case and italic but with a capital M at he beginning.
\nDiscussion:
\nThe style is consistent with rings of a similar date. Posy rings were often gifts exchanged by lovers and the messages engraved on the unseen side are an evocative insight into the past. These rings were also used as betrothal and wedding rings. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. A similar finger ring is BERK-BAB9D4 (2007 T488).<\/p>\n

A silver-gilt hair ornament, used as a hair slide. The object is formed from three conjoined pieces of metal. The back plate is the largest and is formed from an openwork decoratively shaped central feature, joined to two pointed ovals, there are small rivet holes in the point of the pointed oval. The back plate terminates on either end with a trefoil. The back plate has a silver surface, but some parts of it have worn through showing that the back frame is hollow and not solid. The hallmark can clearly be seen on the central feature. The hallmark is divided into three rectangles. Firstly, P.P&G, secondly a passant lion facing left and thirdly the letter x. Geoff Egan (National Finds Adviser - Early Medieval to Post Medieval objects) has been able to trace this hallmark. It indicates that the hair slide was possibly manufactured in York, in 1834-5. The front surface of the back plate has been decorated with incised rocker-arm (hand drawn) markings. The rocker-arm can be seen around the edge of the two pointed oval shapes. The trefoil terminals are decorated with floral motifs. The second part of slide is formed from a simple rectangular strip of gilded silver, it has a chamfered reverse, with two rivet holes drilled into it. These sit inside the pointed oval shapes of the backplate. This strip has been soldered onto the back plate. It also has a trefoil terminal which sits inside the terminals of the back plate. These are heavily gilded and decorated with incised floral motifs. There are also some leaf motifs on the strip. Finally the third element to this hair slide is a figure-of-eight plate, which has been soldered on top of the backplate, holding the second element in place. It is simply formed from a flat piece of gilded silver. Some very fine rocker-arm has been used to decorate the front surface. A rectangular seal matrix with what is probably a Trader's Mark design. The intaglio is not cut very deep and therefore it is difficult to obtain a clear interpretation of the impression. The suspension loop which is not pierced has a double collar below terminating in a gradually tapering handle above the base.<\/p>

A cast lead bag seal, formed from two circular discs, joined together via a loop. One surface features a pinecone with an anvil shaped projection below. The pinecone in decorated with raised pellets. There is a six-pointed star in the right field. L ? E can been seen to the top left of the disc. The reverse is decorated with what appears to be a stylised S and I, (the S sits on top of the I). An incomplete case copper alloy spur, probably dating to the 18th - 19th Century. The sides have a lozenge shaped section and are decorated with an incised floral design. They are inlaid with gold or silver. One is complete with a figure of eight terminal, the other has lost its terminal due to a break. The neck has two faceted faces decorated with a series of chevrons. The rowel box and rowel no longer survive.<\/p>","notes":"

A cast copper alloy apothecaries weight, dating from the 17th Century onwards. The weight is rectangular, with flat faces. One face is stamped with '2 Drachm', the other with 3Y. Similar weights can be seen in Biggs, p8.<\/p>

A cast copper alloy plate fragment probably from a strap fitting or buckle plate. The plate has broken widthways. The plate is an elongated triangle shape, missing its point, due to the break. The wider terminal of the plate contains two rivet holes and the front surface of the plate has been decorated with an incised linear border infilled with a floral design. The terminal with the rivet holes has rounded corners (one is slightly damaged). The reverse is flat and undecorated. This object is probably of post-medieval date, owing to the floral design. The hearts are decorated with a double border. A complete silver seal matrix of 17th Century date. The seal matrix has a fluted trifoliate handle with a small knop projecting from the tip of the upper foliate. The upper foliate is tear-drop shaped while the two smaller side foliates are circular. From the handle a short, circular sectioned stem flares outwards to form the die. The die is oval in plan and is engraved with a fleur-de-lis design flanked by the initials WB.<\/p>\n

Sir William Babthorpe is recorded as having owned the manor of Osgodby until 1622 following its passing to the Babthorpe family in circa 1440 (British History Online, 2010). Given the inscribed initials and corresponding date it is possible that this seal matrix belonged to Sir William Babthorpe.
\nNumerous examples of silver seal matrixes are reported as Treasure each year including 2009 T27 (SUSS-8A6B12).
\nIn terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.<\/p>
