This knife handle tapers towards the socket for the knife; it is oval in cross-section and the terminal is carved to form a three-dimensional zoomorphic head, probably depicting a horse. The handle is hollowed to approximately half-way along its length to accommodate the tang of the knife. Part of the socket and part of the zoomorphic terminal is broken and missing. The body of the handle is decorated with bands of 3 parallel lines. Of the zoomorphic head the neck, mouth and mane are surviving. The detail on the head is marked by carved lines, for example, one diagonal line marks the jaw and the mane is depicted by a series of transverse short lines. The head is also decorated with two ring and dot motifs on each side of the head; one on the side of the face and one on the neck. This knife handle fits within the panoply of this kind of carving for the late 16th century. T is similar in style to LON-A2DDE5 and LVPL-088561 although both are anthropomorphic rather than zoomorphic. The bowl is set at an oblique angle to the stem and it is decorated with a band of rouletted decoration just below the rim. There is a plain, flat, oval foot at the junction between the bowl and the stem. The stem has no distinguishing marks and it broken 25.22mm away from the bowl. The end of the stem is missing. The figurine is a moulded female figure with stabbed decoration on the necklace, cuffs and down the panel on the front of the dress; the folds of the dress are incised. The head, neck and lower half of the skirt is missing from this figurine; the torso, arms and upper half of the skirt remain. This is a bichrome figurine glazed yellow with some copper green flecks outside and the stabbed decoration coloured green. The interior is hollow and it is not glazed. The fabric is off-white with buff surfaces. A very similar example is published in Hurst, Neal & van Beuningen (1986:237 no.356 fig 112) however there is a slight variation in the style of the necklace and the colour used on the stabbed decoration. This shelf fragment has flared edges creating an elongated H cross-section (width of shelf 40.80mm, edges flaring to 71.45mm); Roy Stephenson notes these shelves are known as "girder shelves". A thick green glaze covers the majority of the surfaces and there are circular pads of clay which were used to stead and separate the vessels during firing. The surface is also vitrified in areas. This sundial comprises a circular band forming a ring with a circumferential groove around the centre and a slit that extends approximately one third along the length of this groove. The shape of the ring has been distorted and flattened. It is broken across two small circular perforations which probably originally secured the ring from which the sundial would be suspended. Originally there would have been a small slide within the slit used for telling the time, but this is missing. Opposite the slit "OCT" is marked on the external surface. The outer surface of the dial has the months of the year incised in a graduated scale, indicated by their initial letter. January to June are indicated left to right on the upper half of the dial, above the central groove if the attachment loop is at the right. These letters are stamped I F M A M I. By inverting the dial, the months of July to December can be read from left to right on the upper half. These are I A S O N D. The earlier months are now upside-down on the lower half of the dial. When the dial is orientated this way, the markings on the inner surface are legible from left to right and the right way up. This inner surface is essentially the clock face. There are two circumferential grooves which divide the inner surface into thirds. The upper row has the numbers 1-7, the middle row has the number 12 below the number 1 on the row above and the lower row has the numbers 11, 10, 9, 8 arranged in that order below the 12. There are diagonal lines extending the width of the ring through each of the upper row numbers. The copper alloy has a mid green patina. The sherd includes all of the rim and neck of the jug and the applied face-mask. There is a scar at the point of attachment for the upper section of the handle. The sherd is salt-glazed light grey stoneware with cobalt-blue painted decoration under the glaze. The mask shows a face in full view with a ridged line running down the centre of the forehead and the nose, and then a separated line running under the noise and down either side of the mouth, similar to a moustache. Around the face there are radiating pointed ovals. To each side of the mask there are three stamped motifs in the shape of an inverted heart with decorative terminal projecting from the point. At the junction between the neck and the body there are decorative ridge and grooves. A very similar face-mask is shown on the neck of a baluster jug illustrated in Gaimster (1997:260 no.114). Gaimster describes this as a baluster jug with pulled lip and strap handle, with a domed pewter lid and double-acorn thumb piece. Applied around the body of the jug is a frieze of seven shields-of-arms for the Electoral College set within an arcade, each identified by initials. Only the spherical head remains of this pin, the shaft is missing. The head is hollow and there is a circular hole in the base for articulation with pin shaft. The head is decorated with six filigree large rings; three above a circumferential ridge around the midline and three below. These rings above and below the circumferential ridge are arranged so that each lower ring is set in the space between the two above. Inside each ring there are three smaller rings arranged around a central pellet. At the peak of the head there is a small filigree ring with a pellet inside. In between each of the large rings there is a smaller ring with a pellet above abutting the circumferential ridge. A large proportion of gilding remains. Dimensions: diameter: 13.27mm; weight: 2.78g. This knife has a scale tang which is bifurcated midway along the handle so there are two butts. There is a knife end cap remaining on one of the butts, the end cap is missing from the other. The remaining end cap is oval with a copper alloy plate terminal. The scale handle is wooden and secured by rivets; small sections of the handle are missing but the majority is still present. A copper alloy shoulder plate remains on one side of the blade at the junction with the handle but is missing from the other side. The blade tapers towards the point but the point is missing. It has a triangular cross-section tapering towards the cutting edge. There is a maker's mark of a cross approximately one third of the way along the blade just below the back of the blade. Hazel Forsyth notes there are similar examples in the Museum of London's collections which date 1550-1625AD. She suggests this example is probably English.
