A cast copper-alloy clasp, possibly a sword belt fitting of Post-Medieval date, c<\/em>. 1550-1750.<\/p>\n

The clasp has a sub-triangular body in plan, with a hooked end and an incomplete strap frame at the opposite end. The rectangular frame for taking a strap is broken, with only the bases of the arms projecting from the body of the clasp.<\/p>\n

The surface has scrolling vegetal motif in relief, though obscured by corrosion. The underside of the clasp retains a thick, compact layer of iron corrosion.<\/p>\n

The decoration suggests a late 16th or 17th century date. An incomplete cast lead doll of Post-Medieval date, c<\/em> 1650-1670.<\/p>\n

The doll is the upper half of the woman only, cast with detailed in moulded relief. The doll has a domed face with eyes and nose in relief, framed by flaring collar to each side and a row of curled hair above. A pearl necklace separates the face and the body, which has a strip of square panels running down each side and the centre of the chest, between a pair of domed breasts. The arms emerge from the shoulder and bend down at the elbow in narrow sleeves, such that each arm is shaped like the number 7. The arms join the body at the waist, but a fold or bend has snapped the lower body off of the doll.<\/p>\n

The reverse is also decorated, bearing the same deocration as the face, but lacking a pearl necklace.<\/p>\n

The buckle is double-looped wth frames that are D-shaped in plan and section. Each outer frame has a flower in its centre. The cast-integral crossbar is considerably thinner than the frame, and there are moulded knop-like projects at each end of the crossbar between the curving frame.<\/p>\n

A cast copper-alloy hinge fitting of probable Post-Medieval date, c<\/em>. 1650-1800.<\/p>\n

The hinge is nearly complete, with the openwork baseplate and swivel plate still working. The baseplate consists of a rectangular base with grooved, moulded decoration above the two cylindrical lugs. The base is surmounted by a pair of feather-like shapes with scrolled bases that form an openwork triangle. The circular perforation of the scrolled bases may have originally taken nails for fix the baseplate to something.<\/p>\n

The swivelplate has a cylindrical lug, centrally placed on the base and fitting between the two lugs of the baseplate. The base of the swivelplate matches that of the baseplate and is surmounted by a triangle with an extended projection with a rounded terminal, though this is incomplete.<\/p>\n

The damaged terminal of the swivel plate and the openwork triangle of the baseplate have both been subject to bending\/twisting, probably as a result of the removal of the hinge. The fitting is an incomplete cast plate of copper-alloy of a butterfly shape in plan.The larger lobes of the upper wings have evidence of circular perforations, but the outside has broken off the lobes. The face of the plate is decorated with punched ring-and-dots and annulets, with 7 annulets forming a small flower in the centre of the plate and annulets punched in a linear fashion around the edges of the object. Four ring-and-dots can be seen to form the corners of the 'body' of the butterfly shape, with two further on the entended tail.<\/p>\n

The chain is composed of three complete links and one half-link; it is uncertain what the chain was used for, but a domestic purpose seems more likely than a more utilitarian purpose.<\/p>\n

Each link is formed of a rolled tube of copper-alloy, with its terminals turned inward so that the link forms an S-shape. Each link is connected to two further links, but in a more complex arrangement than a simple end-to-end connection. Two S-shaped linked touch end-to-end and are then connected by a third link perpindicular to the face of the other links. One end of the S of the third link passes through the ends of the other two links, with the opposite end of the S of the third link passing through the opposite end of the 2nd link. In this fashion, each link overlaps by about 2\/3s with another link.<\/p>\n

Each individual link is 32mm in length, 11.60mm in width and 4.5mm in thickness. The clasp has a rectangular body with one square end and one rounded end with a missing central hook. The face may have been decorated, but it is now too worn to be certain of the full extent. Four punched ring-and-dots can be seen closer to the square end.
