The edges and distal end have suffered damage.  The surface is fairly smooth and appears polished in places.\r\n\r\nAlthough there is no doubt as to the findspot of the axe, there is doubt over whether it is from this location originally.  There are two factors that cast doubt; the first is that the find is from Holbeach, which due to its location in the wash has seen tremendous silting since Roman times.  Any material earlier than Roman would be expected to be buried very deep.  Secondly, at the other end of the field, some 70m away, the finder discovered a fossil on the reverse of which were the letters 'P30'. When held in the left hand, the secondary working would protect the finger from both sides when using either of the two gravers on either side of the bulb of percussion.  When held in the right hand the flint could be used as a knife, with the index finger resting on the cortex.  Part of the cortex has been removed to form a hollow scraper.  On the opposite side of the knife blade there has been secondary working carried out, presumably to strengthen the edge.  Another tool has been manufactured by removing a fine flake from the dorsal surface, and several small spalls from the ventral surface, all at the proximal end, to form a Burin or Graver facet.  The colour of the flake is brown matt flint.","notes":null,"reuse":null,"created":"2004-02-03 10:18:39","updated":"2011-03-21 11:05:36","secwfstage":"3","findofnote":null,"objecttypecert":"1","datefound1":null,"datefound2":null,"inscription":null,"disccircum":null,"museumAccession":null,"subsequentAction":"1","objectCertainty":"1","dateFromCertainty":null,"dateToCertainty":null,"dateFoundFromCertainty":null,"dateFoundToCertainty":null,"subPeriodFrom":"3","subPeriodTo":"3","createdBy":"54","obverse_description":null,"obverse_inscription":null,"reverse_description":null,"reverse_inscription":null,"denomination":null,"degree_of_wear":null,"allen_type":null,"va_type":null,"mack":null,"reeceID":null,"die":null,"wearID":null,"moneyer":null,"revtypeID":null,"categoryID":null,"typeID":null,"tribeID":null,"status":null,"rulerQualifier":null,"denominationQualifier":null,"mintQualifier":null,"dieAxisCertainty":null,"initialMark":null,"reverseMintMark":null,"statusQualifier":null,"reason":null,"username":"adaubney","fullname":"Adam Daubney","institution":"LIN","usernameUpdate":"dpett","fullnameUpdate":"Daniel Pett","primaryMaterial":"Flint","secondaryMaterial":null,"decoration":null,"style":null,"manufacture":"Knapped\/flaked","surfaceTreatment":null,"completeness":null,"preservation":"Good","cert":"Certain","periodFrom":"PALAEOLITHIC","periodTo":"PALAEOLITHIC","discmethod":"Chance find during metal detecting","tribe":null,"region":null,"area":null,"ruler1":null,"ruler2":null,"period_name":null,"date_range":null,"mint_name":null,"wear":null,"category":null,"type":null,"reverseType":null,"county":"LINCOLNSHIRE","district":"NORTH KESTEVEN","knownas":null,"gridRefSource":null}]},"params":{"broadperiod":"palaeolithic","createdby":"54","format":"json"}}
