It weighs approximately 1.2kg.\r\n\r\nOne end of the stone tapers to a somewhat flattened 'chisel-shaped' terminal.  The opposite end tapers to a central rounded terminal.  Approximately 95mm from the rounded end is a smoothed, triangular indentation, which may be natural or shaped.\r\n\r\nThe stone could be be a tool, but there is no conclusive proof of human shaping of the stone.  The strongest evidence of its use as a tool is due to its shape, and when connected to a haft, the stone would function as a mattock, hoe, or hammer\/mallet.","notes":null,"reuse":null,"created":"2006-06-01 10:19:03","updated":"2011-02-24 13:47:52","secwfstage":"4","findofnote":"0","objecttypecert":"3","datefound1":"2006-05-20","datefound2":null,"inscription":null,"disccircum":"Found while walking","museumAccession":null,"subsequentAction":"1","objectCertainty":"3","dateFromCertainty":null,"dateToCertainty":null,"dateFoundFromCertainty":"1","dateFoundToCertainty":null,"subPeriodFrom":null,"subPeriodTo":null,"createdBy":"438","obverse_description":null,"obverse_inscription":null,"reverse_description":null,"reverse_inscription":null,"denomination":null,"degree_of_wear":null,"allen_type":null,"va_type":null,"mack":null,"reeceID":null,"die":null,"wearID":null,"moneyer":null,"revtypeID":null,"categoryID":null,"typeID":null,"tribeID":null,"status":null,"rulerQualifier":null,"denominationQualifier":null,"mintQualifier":null,"dieAxisCertainty":null,"initialMark":null,"reverseMintMark":null,"statusQualifier":null,"reason":null,"username":"rcollins","fullname":"Robert Collins","institution":"NCL","usernameUpdate":"dpett","fullnameUpdate":"Daniel Pett","primaryMaterial":"Stone","secondaryMaterial":null,"decoration":null,"style":null,"manufacture":null,"surfaceTreatment":null,"completeness":"Complete","preservation":null,"cert":"Possibly","periodFrom":"PALAEOLITHIC","periodTo":"BRONZE AGE","discmethod":"Other chance find","tribe":null,"region":null,"area":null,"ruler1":null,"ruler2":null,"period_name":null,"date_range":null,"mint_name":null,"wear":null,"category":null,"type":null,"reverseType":null,"county":"NORTHUMBERLAND","district":"BERWICK UPON TWEED","knownas":null,"gridRefSource":"From Map"},{"old_findID":"NCL-2FB3B6","id":"133417","uniqueID":"0014472FF2A012D1","objecttype":"LITHIC IMPLEMENT","classification":null,"subclass":null,"length":"113","height":null,"width":"44","thickness":"12","diameter":null,"quantity":"1","other_ref":null,"treasureID":null,"broadperiod":"PALAEOLITHIC","numdate1":null,"numdate2":null,"culture":null,"description":"A probable stone tool, period unknown.\r\n\r\nThe stone is sub-rectangular in shape, with one short edge slightly curving due to wear.  Its dimensions are 113mm in length, 46mm in width narrowing to 42mm in width at the worn edge, and 14mm in thickness narrowing down to 2mm thickness at the worn edge.\r\n\r\nThe stone is a very dense and heavy igneous rock.  It is a muddy red-brown in colour with a smoothed outer cortex.  The cortex covers approximately 40% of the stone with uneven distribution on all faces.\r\n\r\nThe stone has been shaped due to regular and\/or constant use, and it fits comfortably in the hand.  \r\n\r\nThe object could have served a number of functions, such as a hand-axe, whet stone, scraper, or smoother.  The shape of its worn, 'working' edge suggests a scraping or smoothing motion formed it.","notes":null,"reuse":null,"created":"2006-05-23 13:25:14","updated":"2011-02-24 13:47:52","secwfstage":"4","findofnote":"0","objecttypecert":"2","datefound1":"1996-01-01","datefound2":null,"inscription":null,"disccircum":null,"museumAccession":null,"subsequentAction":"1","objectCertainty":"2","dateFromCertainty":null,"dateToCertainty":null,"dateFoundFromCertainty":"1","dateFoundToCertainty":null,"subPeriodFrom":null,"subPeriodTo":null,"createdBy":"438","obverse_description":null,"obverse_inscription":null,"reverse_description":null,"reverse_inscription":null,"denomination":null,"degree_of_wear":null,"allen_type":null,"va_type":null,"mack":null,"reeceID":null,"die":null,"wearID":null,"moneyer":null,"revtypeID":null,"categoryID":null,"typeID":null,"tribeID":null,"status":null,"rulerQualifier":null,"denominationQualifier":null,"mintQualifier":null,"dieAxisCertainty":null,"initialMark":null,"reverseMintMark":null,"statusQualifier":null,"reason":null,"username":"rcollins","fullname":"Robert Collins","institution":"NCL","usernameUpdate":"dpett","fullnameUpdate":"Daniel Pett","primaryMaterial":"Stone","secondaryMaterial":null,"decoration":null,"style":null,"manufacture":null,"surfaceTreatment":null,"completeness":"Complete","preservation":null,"cert":"Probably","periodFrom":"PALAEOLITHIC","periodTo":"ROMAN","discmethod":"Metal detector","tribe":null,"region":null,"area":null,"ruler1":null,"ruler2":null,"period_name":null,"date_range":null,"mint_name":null,"wear":null,"category":null,"type":null,"reverseType":null,"county":"DURHAM","district":"DERWENTSIDE","knownas":"near Beamish","gridRefSource":"From Map"}]},"params":{"broadperiod":"palaeolithic","createdby":"438","format":"json"}}
