This artefact was found in the drag head of the Arco Humber on the 12th September 2008. It was
\nfound during dredging activity in licence area 408, which is in the Humber region.<\/p>

Hanson_0191 was described by wharf staff as an angled section of steel
\nwork. It measures around 0.8m long and was discovered after it became
\nlodged in the drag head of the Arco Humber. Staff retrieved it when
\nclearing it from the drag. Hanson_0191 is not immediately diagnostic.<\/p>
\n<\/p>\n\n
\n<\/p>\n\n
Images of the item were sent to the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall
\nwhere Liza Verity, Information Specialist at the Museum, showed them to
\ncolleagues. The Ship Model Curator believed that this item was probably
\nused on a vessel as ballast or as an anchor for nets or lobster pots. It has
\nbeen cut using oxy-acetylene gas giving it the 'ridged' appearance along
\nseveral of its edges and around the hole in the top of the item. This would
\nsupport the latter suggestion that this has served as a net or pot weight.
\nThe hole in the top of the item would have allowed the attachment of ropes
\nor nets in order to secure Hanson_0191 to what it was intended to anchor.
\nAs this item would have been routinely lowered to the seabed during its
\nuse it may have been accidently lost or it may have been deliberately
\ndiscarded when no longer required. However, since it would have been
\ntransported on board a vessel there is still the possibility that this find
\noriginated from a wreck site.<\/p>","notes":"

An undiagnostic crushed and damaged piece of gilded silver. It is possibly a ferrule, as the object appears to resemble a crushed cylinder. The cylinder is decorated with two parallel raised bands. The key identifying feature is the kick over at the top of the handle, this is typically French. The folded over guard indicates that this is a dress sword. It had to be folded over so not to damage the dress uniform. The hilt is a half-basket Continental type. The holes in the hilt are for decoration \u2013 again this is a French design. \r\nThe back of the sword blade is flat, it is therefore a single edged sword with two fullers on either side of the blade. \r\nThe sword is a standard issue dress sword that would have been more decorative than functional. It would have been carried by an Infantry Officer.\r\nThe sword blade has lost about a foot of length and would have originally been about 30 inches in length. \r\nFrench versions of the dress sword tend to be made of brass or gilding metal. Many other countries copied the style. It is likely that the sword came into the Hull area due to Hull\u2019s cosmopolitan nature during the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. It could have originated from any number of places as a naval or army officer's side arm.
