Five copper-alloy fragments of what appear to be from the same object, possibly World II ordnance. The 'rim' is rectangular in cross-section with the next extending flush with the interior. The rim is silvered or tinned but otherwise undecorated on the top and exterior. Two pieces of rim survive and these appear to join, but they dot form a circle, unless the current angles are somewhat distorted. The shorter piece of rim is decorated with silvered\/tinned horizontal ribs, and a second fragment of neck joins onto the base of this piece. The other piece of rim is decorated with ten or eleven indented squares, followed by ribs, followed by six further indented squares. Two additional small fragments of 'neck' were also found in the same area as the rim. One of these is lozenge-shaped and the other triangular. Both bear the same ribs but have a solid perimeter around them. The sides are smooth and worn, but traces of shiney surface suggest that they were also silvered or tinned, implying that these are mounts rather than cut from the neck. The 'mounts' are also approximately 1mm thicker than the surviving part of the rim.<\/p>\n

A) Half-rounded rim fragment = 80mm circumference, 6mm wide, 5mm deep. Neck = 2mm wide.<\/p>\n

B) Quarter rim fragment = 70m long, 6mm wide, 6mm deep. Neck = 2 to 3mm thick, 5mm long (from base of rim).<\/p>\n

C) Neck fragment adjoining (B) = 47mm long, 19mm deep, 2 to 3mm thick.<\/p>\n

D) Lozenge-shaped 'mount' = 20mm long, 13mm wide, 4mm thick.<\/p>\n

An elaborate 'French figural' clay pipe bowl depicting the artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). The face closely resembles Rubens as seen in portraits. His face is slender and he has a moustache and beard. The tips of the moustache curl upwards. He wears a large rimed hat sloped to one side. The stem is broken at the base. Black paint remains on one eye and both eyebrows.<\/p>\n

An elaborate bowl from a 'Cadger' or 'Novelty' clay tobacco pipe in the form of the head of a bearded male, probably St Nicholas (Santa). The man has a cheerful face with slender eyes, smiling mouth and the top row of teeth on display. He has a large nose and well defined cheeks. His beard is long and wavey and his hair is formed by holly leaves and berries. The bowl is large, oval in plan and broken at the base of the stem.<\/p>\n

2. Domed lead bullet, ?ceramic in hollow interior, three bands around body, two notches in tip. The body has a series of horizonal lines running across the body suggesting that this has been fired. L: 24mm, diam: 14mm, internal diam: 10mmm, weight: 30.25g.<\/p>\n

3. Body from a bullet. The body is cylindrical and has four bands. The interior contains ?ceramic. The head has bent on impact; the domed tip is missing.. L: 21mm, diameter: 15mm, internal diameter: 12mm, weight: 30.02g.<\/p>\n

4. Splayed lead bullet. The bullet has splayed on impact. The body has four bands. L; 35mm, W: 25mm, thickness: 10mm, Weight: 29.32g.<\/p>\n

5. Flat lead bullet. The bullet has flattened on impact. The bullet is now flat, circular and displays three bands. The bullet appears to have impacted side-on. Diameter: 37mm, thickness 3mm. Weight: 27.97g.<\/p>\n

6. Flattened tip from a lead bullet. The tip is domed with a flat base. A complete but damaged copper-alloy crotal bell. The bell is spherical with a moulded lip around the waist. The upper hemisphere contains two circular holes and a rectangular loop. The lower has the traditional channel joining two circular holes. An iron pea survives in the centre. The lower hemisphere is decorated with an incised sunburst design of oval petals. A copper-alloy halfpenny of George III. The penny shows contemporary manipulation. A copper-alloy 1849 California \"Gold rush\" gaming token in the form of a Liberty head half eagle gold piece.<\/p>\n

The obverse depicts Liberty with a coronet in her hair, encircled by thirteen stars, symbolic of the thirteen original colonies (one star is missing due to a hole drilled through the coin). Below the head is the date 1849. The reverse depicts a \"49er\" gold miner with top hat crouching by a river. The miner holds a very large nugget. In front of him is a spade, and in the background are two palm trees. Above is the word 'CALIFORNIA', and below is the date 1849. The hole is located so that is is in front of Liberty and to the top right of the miner.<\/p>\n

California gaming tokens date from the gold rush era and afterwards. They bear the obverse inscription 'California' or 'California Counter' or 'California Token' on them, and picture liberty heads, gold panners, flags, eagles, and bears (Stephen P. Albert and Lawerence E. Elman, 1992, Tokens and Medals - A guide to the Identification and Values of United States Exonumia<\/em>). An incomplete Modern cast-lead pencil sharpener of 19th century date (c. 1850-c. 1900).
\nThe lower part is hollow and cone-shaped to house the pencil. It has a rim at the base and a vertical slot at one side. On the opposite side of the slot there is a raised cartouche or containing the initials 'SS'. The decorative handle is sub-triangular in plan and pointed in side view. Two scrolls rise from each side of the cone and meet a the top leaving a openwork area in the centre. The scrolls support a scallop-like feature which has an almost similar design on each face with a circular hole at the base.<\/p>\n

This sharpener is worn and corroded in places and has a buff patina. The iron cutting blade is missing but has left iron staining on the inside.<\/p>\n

Similar pencil sharpeners have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. A nineteenth century lead Russian bale seal of St. Petersburg. The seal is a circular disc with a hole running between the two faces for the cord or string. Lettering is visible on both sides. The letters are very worn in places. Side A reads: ?SP[B]\/[?}HRH\/{?N]1803. Side B reads: ?NA\/?r\u041b\u041b?N\/??A\/?H14.<\/p>\n

The letters SPB stand for St. Petersburg. The seal indicates that the goods have been checked for quality and\/or taxed. A silver perpetual calendar from a Georgian porte crayon. The object is a silver tube inscribed with six bands each divided into seven squares. The upper five bands are inscribed with four x's followed by the numbers 1-31. The lower band is inscribed with the initials of the days of the week.<\/p>\n

A similar calender from a porte crayon is illustrated on the front cover of 'Collecting Pencils', by Courtier, Marshall & Marshall (second revised edition). The object was probably made by the Birmingham silversmith Joseph Willmore (1803-45) in 1817.

A modern lead alloy seal from a bag of fertliser made by the Anglo-Continental Guano Works of Silvertown, London. The seal dates circa 1914-1937. The seal is oval, flat and decorated on both sides. The obverse reads: [ANGL]O CONT[INENTAL WORKS LONDON] around LATE OHLEN[DORFF], and on the reverse: TRADE MARK with the image of a cornucopia between the two words.<\/p>\n

Anglo-Continental, originally Ohlendorff & Co., had been founded in 1873, and remained a German company until the First World War, when it was reconstituted under British control. It was taken over in 1937 by Fisons Ltd. and closed in 1946. The guano, which was bird or bat excrement, was brought over from Peru. This seal still shows the Ohlendorff name (LATE). Later just the cornucopia trademark remained. A modern lead alloy seal probably dating to the 19th century or early 20th century. The seal is oval, flat and decorated on both sides. One side is decorated with a shield containing a short cross with four pellets in the upper left and right hand corners. The shield is apparently set within a circular border of pellets. The other side is decorated with what appear to be the conjoined letters T and M, with what might be the number 19 below. The letters are set within a circular border of pellets.<\/p>\n

The lower hemisphere contains two holes joined by a channel. One one side are the makers initials WG, and on the other side is what appears to be the symbol of a founder's hammer. Along the bottom edge is a rope-like border as commonly seen on livery badges. The badge probably dates to the eighteenth or nineteenth century.
