<notes>The finder&#39;s research notes: if this ramrod is military it will predate 1760, steel replaced wood 1760, if sporting weapon the date will continue to c.1880 (the finder believes this to be the most likely option). This is a ramrod for a muzzle&#45;loading weapon of 0.729&quot; bore or very similar 12bore, the ram rod is 36&quot; in length, therefore barrel must be less than this.</notes>

Model</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A Modern limestone model of an Egyptian scarab (19th – early 20th century). The model has been carved to form a three&#45;dimensional scarab beetle and the flat under&#45;side is carved with a cartouche and hieroglyphics.

Dr Stephen Quirke notes that this is an interesting example and similar examples were usually discarded from collections as not ancient. The cartouche (name&#45;ring) containing the hieroglyphs is an often&#45;copied motif – the signs themselves are accurate enough and read Menmaatra, which is the throne&#45;name of king Sety I, about 1290 BC, father of king Ramses II – the hieroglyph under the name&#45;ring is the sign for ‘gold’ (Egyptian nbw) – the criteria for considering it not ancient are (1) the criss&#45;cross interior of the gold&#45;hieroglyph and lower sign in the cartouch, (2) the material, which looks like limestone, not usually used for Sety I&#45;Ramses II ancient scarabs, (3) the rough cutting, partly caused by the material, (4) the feather on the head of the goddess&#45;hieroglyph (Maat) is a simple triangle which I have never seen on an ancient scarab (it should have the rounded tip of a plum) – there are also many ‘rustic’ ancient scarabs, of course, and many ancient copies made outside Egypt.

Dimensions: length: 66.48mm; width: 54.85mm; thickness: 36.62mm; weight: 147.09g.

Identification by Dr Stephen Quirke, Curator The Petrie Museum.
