A cast copper-alloy probable pipe tamper of 19th or early 20th century date.<\/p>\n
The object takes the form of a revolver or 'six-shooter' handgun, missing the handle. The attachment for the handle is a projecting disc that would have fitted into a socket. The gun is not an exact replica in miniature, however, as there is no trigger or trigger guard, hammer or sight at the end of the barrel. The end of the barrel of worn and slightly rounded.<\/p>\n

The whistle has a tubular body with one end capped with a broken suspension loop. The opposite end is open. A trapezoidal mouthpiece projects perpendicular to the body. There is a sub-square perforation where the mouthpiece meets the body.<\/p>\n

Modern In the absence of parallels in the British Museum it is difficult to date the finger-ring but it is unlikely to be more than 100 years old. The edge is convex, but it was never finished to function as a cutting edge, and has suffered damage so that it looks like a wave in section. Hammer marks are visible on all faces of the blade.\r\n\r\nThe haft is circular in section with a thickened head to take the weight and attachment of the blade. The haft has been decorated in such a fashion as to emulate the tecture of a wooden haft.\r\n\r\nThe object would not have functioned well as a usefool tool, and it was probably a ceremonial axe or prestige item. \r\n\r\nChristopher Spring of the British Museum has indicated that this type of axe was typically for ceremony or display. It's form is not that distinctive, with similar types common in the western, central, and southern regions of Africa. However, the attachment\/fitting for the leg no longer survives, as the shank was cut.\r\n\r\nThe FLO did not see the object in person, but has provided this description from a photograph. It seems likely the object is a homemade cockspur fashioned after cock-fighting was made illegal.
